I'm not especially up in arms about the delay.

I don't doubt the tariffs are a problem for Exalted Funeral. They're not the whole story, given that this kickstarter is already many months late. But that's kickstarter. I've seen very few that I backed deliver by the estimated fulfillment date. This is far from the worst I've seen.

The biggest problem really are the stretch goals for these big, over-elaborate projects. If everything is not already written or if near-tchotchkes (like minis, dice, dice bags -- pretty much anything other than books) are on the table, then there will almost certainly be substantial delay.

Situation normal: all fouled up.

Dolmenwood looked great when it first started. I listened to the live play of this setting by 3D6 Down Yhe Line and was really impressed by the setting. 

Then a few months in, the sensitivity readers had their way with the product and it became a complete letdown. 

This is why my stance is "Wait-and-see" when it comes to new stuff.

I just got the email from Exalted Funeral stating they would provide a refund, saying "We respect your view and we will certainly honor your request to cancel and refund your Standard Bundle pre-order and the shipping fee."

So, no hassles.

It's convenient that they can use tariffs as an excuse for the delays...even though had they kept on schedule the impact of said tariffs would be nonexistent.

Reminds me of car dealers around here raising prices before ANY effects of the current financial climate would affect what's currently sitting in their lot. Any excuse to fleece the customer!

Gavin Norman and Necrotic Gnome are the creators of OSE and Dolmenwood. He makes good products and I've been enjoying reading Dolmenwood. Much like Arcane Library, his books are apolitical and lacking in "woke" content, including Safety Tools.

Exalted Funeral is the publisher, so that's something different entirely.

Regardless, everybody who's been publishing overseas is affected by this, like it or not. I think any reasonable person or company would have been able to anticipate the suddenness and scale of these tariffs or their impact. The capability in the US for printing might not exist to meet the demand at the present time.

A handful of companies like Troll Lord Games made some strategic decisions almost two decades ago with printing in the US, that happened to work out great in the current climate. Not everybody made those decisions in order to keep down costs, in what is arguably a low-profit margin industry. Some companies are based in Europe and sell to both the US and European/World markets. They print in Europe and China (Free League prints in Lithuania.) If tariffs exist in Europe now, will Troll Lord Games have to print their books also in Europe in order to capture that market?

That said, I wouldn't poo-poo a project just because of one oddly-worded announcement; my feeling is the product(s) stand on its own merit. Additionally Kickstarter campaigns routinely run late all the time--not saying it's right--it's the reality of publishing.

I suspect at least some companies probably floated the idea of also using egg prices as an excuse but it seems that they likely decided against it ultimately...
