This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Banned from PilotNET the LANCER discord... should I feel bad?

I got banned from the LANCER RPG Discord server Pilot NET for:
-posting the sentence "pdfs are not actual books"
-and posting an ad for my online game mentioning the fact that we do not use pronouns and safety tools at my table...
Should I feel bad for being cancelled from a place that to me feels controlled and oppressive and ran by political activists?

sorry, if this isn't the place to post about that kind of useless rant, I am new around here, don't know the place very well yet, I could not find somewhere in the forum dedicated to complaints like this... :)

Fheredin

They actually gave you an explanation? What, do the mods of PilotNET think this is 2012 or something?

Zalman

I'm not one to tell others how they should feel, but you might reconsider your avatar for this site.

Your complaint, as well as your advertisement, are likely both welcome here (at least as far as they are described).

If a complaint is about Pen and Paper RPG spaces, it's appropriate in this forum.
Old School? Back in my day we just called it "School."

Wait... So if you don't use pronouns, how do you refer to people in the third person or use the possessive tense?  That sounds like very stilted and unnatural speech in game.  :)

Proclaiming that you're not using safety tools unnecessarily gives credence and validity to their use elsewhere and implies that it is the default (similar to using ridiculous randomly rolled IRL neopronouns).   Just don't use them.   I don't.  You don't need to proclaim it loudly for clout as it just makes you no better than the weirdos who loudly proclaim they do.

I wanted to scare off the people who hide behind this weird messing with pronouns. But since then I have removed that line from my ad, if someone comes up with a request like that I'll just decline it. I generally interview people before I admit them at my table, to make sure everyone is on the same page, so I guess i'll have to make it clear then during that first interview.

Welcome to Mos Eisley. We don't give a fuck about pronouns either. Only droids play Lancers. And you know... droids ain't particularly welcome in the cantina unless you got a lightsaber.

I suppose it worked in a sense if you got booted from the discord!   I'd say go with an individual approach and do the research instead of a more blanket ban.   Be better than the purple haired side shaved weirdos with flags in their bios and made up nonsense words for their pronouns.

:)  I still want to give this game a go, play it my way. I look for a way to create my own path now, disconnected from this non-sense. I guess I need to avoid provoking those kind of situations in the first place, but something in me is often looking to go head first into those trappings; I am working on it.

yes, you are totally right. I got tricked into playing their game. I should just remain normal and focus on the clarity of the space I want to breath in and foster.

Fuck them, post here.

By the way, have you heard about our Lord and Savior, Mekton Zeta and Mekton II? ;)
"Meh."

No worries.  I'm not saying you should ignore any potential red flags (literally in many of the weirdos' cases!) but rather just judge them on their individual merits.  Regardless, good luck!

Spooky

I don't allow women in my games and advertise as so.

It's called freedom of association.
Motoko Kusanagi is Deunan Knute for basic queers

Venka

Lancer is famously political, with devs that push for both identity politics and actual economic leftism.  They also run around on social media making their position very clear.  It's certainly enough that I'd never consider touching their game- it can't be good enough to be worth all that baggage.

Basically getting banned from their discord is a minor badge of honor at least.

Cathode Ray

Like Venka said: Badge of honor.
Discord admins can make their own rules for their servers, and are free to ban you if thye don't like your behavior.  Even fascist ones like the ones that banned you.  But if what you did didn't violate the actual rules, they should have let you know they don't like rational behavior and stop it, and give you at least a chance to change or quit on your own.

The good news is, it's not hard to make your own Discord server.  Put a few dice bots in, make a few channel categories for play-by-post games, and you're all set!
