This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: weirdguy564 on April 10, 2025, 07:44:07 PMCongrats to Kelsie.  I'm sure she will make a good game.  Shadowdark is a decent RPG at its core.

I'm hoping that the classes in this expansion help fill out the classic fantasy tropes the SD hasn't catered to so far.

Have you seen the Player's Companion on Drivethru by Chubby Funster/Greg Christopher? Thirty-six classes and about twenty-four new ancestries. I had fun last night playing my hobgoblin spy.

Silverblade

One of the selling points of Shadowdark is its fast and streamlined.  But it too is slowly but surely showing signs of bloat. I know people love new classes and races but each addition creates more to manage.

Ranger really wasn't needed and the new Paladin (Cavalier really) is also unnecessary. The Fighter and Priest covered those classes well.

But I get it. You have to give people a reason to buy your stuff. Just a mild criticism from someone who loves the game.

Normally I would agree, yet with two extra books (player and gm companion) our table really has decades of material and having more class options in this particular approach is a plus as it is lethal and with more choices our GM actually likes tying in the differing traits, still easier that sorting out feats and skills.
