This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

My academic library has these RPGs. Which books would you recommend?

Some other titles are mixed in, but some of these are classics. Interesting that it's mostly from the 90s

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Looking at what you have on the shelf there, Cyberpunk 2020, Ars Magica, Warhammer Fantasy RPG, and The Complete Dreamlands are all worth your time.  Shadowrun 2e is a broken system but it's probably the best presentation of setting.
>Blade Runner RPG
Terrible idea, overwhelming majority of ttrpg players can't pass Voight-Kampff test.

I know how the illegals feel. I'm an alcoholic & they keep setting up these random DUI checkpoints. You have no idea what a chilling effect this has had on the alcoholic community. I know people who are too terrified to even drink & drive anymore. I am literally shaking... mostly in my hands...

Huh, I hadn't even noticed the Dreamlands. :D

Is this the setting of the story "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"? I read it decades ago.

Just to list out what's there - including only actual tabletop RPG books:

Vampire: The Masquerade
The Complete Dreamlands (Call of Cthulhu)
Changeling: The Dreaming
Oriental Adventures (AD&D 1ed)
GURPS Basic Set (3rd ed)
Ars Magica (3rd ed)
GURPS Religion
GURPS Compendium I
GURPS Compendium II
Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0
AD&D Player's Handbook (2nd ed)
Shadowrun 2nd ed
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

It really depends on one's taste. These are all well-known games with significant followings. My favorites would be GURPS, Ars Magica, and Dreamlands.

And yes, Dreamlands is a setting supplement for Call of Cthulhu that details the settings of "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath".

Ars Magica and Shadowrun are both fun reads even if you never intend to play them

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I already know this edition of GURPS fairly well. The longest D&D campaign I was ever in also used AD&D 2nd edition, so I have some nostalgia for that cover,  but I won't even pretend to remember the rules (the DM was pretty much on top of that).

I'll definitely check out Ars Magica and Dreamlands.

I was often curious about Shadowrun. I guess I can check it out now 😄

I believe this section is "Cinema, Media & Arts" or some such.

I'm impressed the Shadowrun 2e book is still in one piece. I used to play it back in the day and the binding was terrible

But the trouble with that is that it was very splatobook heavy. You really needed the magic book and the street samurai book.

I would suggest the Dreamlands one.

See if the Shadowrun 2e book still includes the "optional" color pages for character archetypes.
