Quote from: MerrillWeathermay on December 07, 2024, 09:59:25 AMI have never seen even five minutes of Critical Roll lol

I would literally rather watch golf

Same. I play golf, but would rather watch paint dry than watch it on tv.

I was talking about B/X with a buddy of mine while watching my kids karate, and someone overheard us and asked me "am I a critter?" I said "wtf is that?" and apparently it is what their fans call themselves? I told the guy I had never seen it, but by reputation I would never watch it.

Quote from: Sr. Estrôncio on November 27, 2024, 06:30:43 PMDoes anyone know of any generic system that belongs on the green list?

My go-to generic RPG system has always been Masterbook
there is also a Masterbook EZ system that is scaled-down

There were a bunch of games which used it (Indiana Jones, Necroscope, World of Aden, etc.) and you can easily build your own. I thought about using the rules for a Arcanum game (the old video game, which was awesome)

Quote from: Steeldom on December 06, 2024, 04:55:06 AMYeah Daggerheart is pretty much what I expected:

Nearly all of the shown classes are depicted female and whatever image isn't either looks gay or is some nonhuman.
Pronouns are of course on the top of the character sheet.

"Ancestry" and "Community" instead of race. And I would expect there to be some sort of "lines and veiles" in the final rulebook although I havent seen that yet.

Though two things are interesting. I personally like the dice systems. I really like Genesys with the narrative dice, the idea that a check can succeed but have a bad outcome or vice versa. And Daggerheart does something similar with the 2 D12s.
Also, as it seems, the system is fairly complex for newcommers. So a little bit of "gatekeeping" (which I'm not opposed to, I think if you want to get into something you should do the work to learn it and not demand it being dumbed down for you).

Personally I would still put it on the RED list due to the very woke character creation/artworks but since I am not aware of any anti consumer behaviour from Critical Role a cautious YELLOW might also be apropriate.

What do you guys think?
Strangely enough I don't hate pronouns as a thing when you have weird races (thinking in daggerheart's case the fungril and the clanker) that probably don't have a human concept of gender. Although it being included almost always isn't done because it makes sense but to appeal to the LGBTQ crowd.

I actually don't HATE the system as it's shown, but it's definitely not for me (I would probably PLAY in it if someone ran it, just because it's intriguing). It does seem fairly complex though for something aimed at people who have barely played D&D (CR's core audience I'd assume). That said though, Critical Role is terrible and has done irreparable damage to the D&D brand/RPG genre.

Even in this case, the ideologically-based "pronouns" isn't needed.  A species's gender(s) ,or alternative to gender(s), can be described in the creature/race description.  If the most clarity is required, the description can state, "creature is referred to is "it".

1. I despise Critical Roll. Everything about it is WRONG.
2. Mercer is a poser, grifter, and shitty DM.

Why? I mean they are all woke and involved in woke projects, but it sounds like you are more opposed to the concept of critical role? What's so bad about it? I'm curious.

And Matt Mercer, I admit I only know surface level things about him from the show and some comments/ articles. But apart, again, from the woke leaning I'm not sure what speaks against him?

Why? It does EVERYTHING wrong in the depiction of a "typical" RPG session. It's shitty low-tier actors with a mediocre DM who railroads the entire situation.

Critical Role is one of the culprits in bringing in the norms to RPGs.

I don't want the norms. I don't want idiots with a passing interest fucking up the hobby, treating D&D like it's Monopoly.

What made D&D cool was it's fringe culture aspect.

Made. past-tense.

Now, it's just a fucking brand, Like McDonald's and Nike.

Critical Role is an accomplice to the crime.

And Mercer is still a poser, grifter, and shitty DM. I know this, because what I've seen is cringe as fuck and I KNOW I'm better than him. He has to railroad because he couldn't DM otherwise. He'd shit himself if he had to run a sandbox campaign. Mercer lacks flexibility. He showed that a few months ago when the group went off the rails of his plot train, and Mercer stormed off.

What a fucking pussy.

IT's his way, it's his plot, and if you stray from the path, he loses his mind.

..and his face is very punch-able.

Good day, sir.

Both of your answers are neither mature nor helpful. And I say this even though I probably agree with you on a lot of things.

I mean it isn't really meant to be an authentic RPG Stream, it is more of a show, they make money off of it. So I can see how Matt Mercer tries to not let it stray far off its course. And in the end, maybe they don't want to play a sandbox. And if you do: Great! RPGs leave enough space for both of those approaches, don't they?

That still doesn't explain what exactly makes him a bad DM. And I'm not saying he is or isn't. Im genuinely curious as to what makes him bad, besides as I sad the woke nonsense that the whole group brings to the table.

I do agree though with the making DND more mainstream and the ramifications of that. I would argue though that WotC was a lost cause long before Critical Role.
It would really be funny if Elon Musk actually bought WotC. Not that I think that he would make things better per se. But maybe his presence would make the people in the company with enough TDS leave and thereby making space for more normal developers.

Well... one can dream...

I bolded it so you can easily see.

And just to be clear: I'm not saying a campaign with a well thought out plot is bad. IT isn't. But Critical Roll is so obviously scripted. It's a railroad to the n'th degree.

He has to make it that way due to the format, but it gives the wrong impression of what a real RPG session is.

'nuff said.

I have my settings block sigs. I don't care about posters' vanity screeds.

What I see is that you don't like newcomers and are a gatekeeping crybaby. There's room enough in this hobby for anyone. I don't care for Critical Role or Mercer myself, but he's had quite a bit of success no matter how much you feel it touches you in a naughty way.

Nah some people don't belong in the hobby. Mostly normies with no respect for the history who want to turn it into queer slop. We've already seen these kind of shitbags ruin every other hobby they've been allowed into, including D&D (case in point: Current D&D)

They aren't normies, they are their own kind of anti social weird.  Those that go from community to community to poison it with their gatekeeping and ideology are a small group of toxic leftist that want you to think they are normies.

Their hobby is to poison everything with their "righteous crusade."  They don't give a shit about tabletop, or video games, or movies, or knitting, or toy collecting, or...  They shit up the internet by running off the actual hobbyist in every hobby and turn their sites into echo chambers with a couple of dozen users and a bunch of bots.

Most normies don't want to deal with the social issues; they just want to enjoy something.
