Why Didn't it Work Out for Venger?

The audience for niche fetishes is there. Venger's failure is a skill issue.

Glad somebody said this. There are plenty of creators who manage just fine, despite facing every supposed hurdle Venger faces. For the money, there are many "gonzo" OSR products I'd buy first. Hell, even taking money out of the equation, there are plenty of "gonzo" OSR products I'd buy first.

Are you implying GorgeWorld is a better / more "skilled" product than Chaalt?

Genuinely curious, as I havent read GorgeWorld.

I have read and reviewed several Chaalt books and I found then creative and interesting but not perfect (maybe too whacky for my table), so I'd really like to hear some recommendations on products you found better than that.

I'm not interested in fetish stuff; something between Chaalt (too whacky) and Carcosa (too dry) could be useful for me.

(Again, if anyone wants to know if Venger's stuff is to their liking, Chaalt is still free).

Gay and/or Trans. Can't criticise 'The Lucanii Drift' for Furry Smut now that Paul Kidd is Pauli Kidd.

Or maybe because there's no "smut" in it? There's one joke about someone losing their virginity to a mimic. One (partially obscured) thong. And some aliens/furries with big (fully clothed) racks. It's PG-13 at the most. I can't stand furries, but if this counts as "smut" to you, you must be a Mormon or something.

R U Pauli Kidd? :D Yeah it's pretty mild, at a level I like.

Not even I, a Christian Puritan finds anything even close to smut on that, my only reason not to buy it it's because of the Furry shit.

I think Venger was wrong about a heap of things. I think a lot of the time he worried about all the wrong things and dismissed very important things. I think he also limited his audience way too much with bad publicity and he failed to realize bad publicity is not better than no publicity.

I do however admire him for many reasons. The man invested time and money and effort into a dream. He sacrificed for it and worked for it for years. Putting himself out their time and time again. He was very imaginative and cared about the quality of his products. My hope is he will take a break and learn from past mistakes and rethink some things and let his imagination fire up once again and sooner than later be back at it again.

We all get knocked down. We all fail from time to time. Why we fall is important, in order to learn and grow from it but how we get back up is just as important.

When he does dust himself off and stand back up, I can't wait to see what he has thought up.

I'm pretty sure that its because that's apparently a fetish. Venger's smut is mostly heterosexual with big-titted sluts. And the thing is that if you're straight and not a fetishist, you don't really need that to be there in every single entertainment you do. Whereas fetishists become obsessed with their fetish. Especially furries.
Of course, the moral cost of producing this would be unbearable.

There's many Gonzo fans, and I think most of them don't particularly need their fantasy to be full of smut. Combining gonzo AND smut actually reduces the audience.

You don't have to be Mormon to recognize the obvious fact that one of the major points of being a furry is fetishism and sexual deviancy.

Oh hell no.

I'm saying that if a product like #GorgeWorld can succeed, then so can something like #Cha'alt. The reasons for Venger's failure are not related to market reach or the nature of the content, but things like ideological advocacy and the quality of the content. At this point he could do worse than write for Lamentations or supplements to #ShadowDark if he was interested in following the money.

Being Jewish, that stuff is neither here nor there for me. I just glanced at the stuff and it all seemed what we in Australia call "try-hard" - meaning someone who is visibly trying hard to present themselves as more competent than they are, in an embarassing way. In this case it's try-hard edgelord. It just didn't interest me.

I think Venger could do good stuff if he was working with someone else who could add some discipline to his creativity. I was just looking back over Revelry in Torth (no keyed maps in a supposed 'mini sandbox') & Isles of Purple Haunted Putrescence, I want to be able to use them, but they are just too scattershot. I was reminded of trying to run Liberation of the Demon Slayer, & discovering that only the first dungeon level had a key matching the map. Why did it go out to PoD like that? With Isles, I used it not long ago for an alternate dimension. My players kept trying to make sense of the nonsensical setting (first random encounter was 'spaceship flies overhead & explodes') - it rapidly got frustrating for everyone. Ultimately it feels like these products aren't really designed for actual use at the table.

Sure, but that's not what's being discussed here. The product in question is in no way "smutty" by any reasonable definition.
