New Star Trek game or not?

I saw this one in a newsletter.

2D20 Modiphius rules.  Star Trek Adventures version 2.0.

DT-RPG Star Trek Adventures 2.0

Anybody know anything about it?

I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

There's a thread rolling on this at the moment, but it doesn't seem to be getting much interest.

I get the impression most people are thoroughly done with the 2d20 system at this point.

This is yet another evolution of 2d20. This time it gets rid of the d6 dice (entirely, if my quick skim of the book is accurate). Talents--both character and starship--seem to be better balanced and the rules got a clean-up, but if you didn't like 2d20 before, you're probably not going to be awed by it now. OTOH, if you could tolerate its narrative rules before, you might like it even better now.

I've played first edition a couple times, really, it's a good fit for Star Trek. I'm not a huge fan of 2d20 as it forces the GM into a very adversarial role.  You need bad stuff points to do things and unless you're playing the game to keep pressure on the players it's a cake walk.

I got a chance to look at it.  It's the same game over all and fully compatible with 1e.  (There's a couple minor tweaks)  It is better written.

Terrible idea, overwhelming majority of ttrpg players can't pass Voight-Kampff test.

I liked 1st edition at the time. But I feel like converting d100 or the Traveler system to star trek works out better.

This is me. The 2d20 system looks bad. And I've heard nothing good about it. Shame because they have some nice properties and I've heard their narrative fluff is pretty solid.

The Rpgsite not liking a new modern game. Or a new version of an existing one.

Who knew. 🙄

I played in a few sessions before real life forced me to drop out. Pretty solid and feels like a Star Trek rpg .

I just don't like the underlying math for the 2d20 system. The drop in success chance is too much between difficulty levels for the skill checks. That theoretically gets compensated for by the meta-mechanics and the possibility of multiple successes on a single die, but I like to be able to ballpark probabilities in my head, and the math gets too complicated for my taste.

I've only played their Conan game, which I hear is generally regarded as the worst version of the system. I believe I heard they got the Discworld license, so maybe I'll give that a look when it comes out.

So, the system fucks the success chances and then introduces a meta-mechanic to "fix" what they fucked...

Brilliant design right there, yes sir!

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Yes, because tenbones is famous for not being THE fan and number one promoter of SWADE around these parts.

But you have to ignore what's before you to push the narrative you've constructed in your head.

I just imagine a post like this existing back in the 90's when a ton of bad rpg's were being made, and it makes me laugh.  Just because a game is new doesn't mean its good or bad, most of the time they deserve some thought and criticism. And just because a game is old doesn't mean it is bad or without merit, and if people still like older games then there is a reason why and it is worth consideration.

One thing I found very unsatisfying from the star trek rpg was character progression and star ship combat rules.  In my opinion the 2d20 system works fine in the star trek game when you start, but it breaks down as characters gain more "levels" to use a common term.

The Conan version is, overall, among the most traditional/least narrative of the 2d20 games (along with Mutant Chronicles). You have typical attribute/skill combinations, and talent trees that build from each skill. I'm not sure who you hear from that it's the worst version, but ask them why they think this.

Star Trek Adventures 1e has very slow to nonexistent character growth so I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that it breaks down at higher "levels" since that was never really a thing. The Klingon book later introduced better advancement rules, and these were incorporated into 2e, but advancement remains slow.

99% of the time and my initial post and this one was not directed at Tenbones, is to take a shit on any game that uses modern design.

Note not talking about Woke material because fuck that. If it's not some 80 or 90s Rpgsite rpg darling it's " insert broken record litany of the same reasons why it sucks".

I'm all for critiquing a game yet it's always the same bullshit with the same reasons.

I'm not a fan of Modphius system in general. It gets the job and I enjoy it.

Sorry not sorry you are entitled to your opinions, I'm entitled to mine.
