As long as marketing thinks it will sell even one book for free then they will keep pushing it like it was a religion.

Why the hell they lock onto marketing trends anyone with even a single brain cell can see is going to fail once people catch on is beyond me.

Then again people like Pundit keep falling for it over and over. So maybe they are on to something. I hope to god not.

Its not just WotC by far of course.

But as long as they can get curiosity buys from negative feedback they will keep doing it. I just can not believe it generates more revenue than it loses.

This sort of marketing is also, by nature. alienating.  They are deliberately making part of their potential market angry.  The question is whether it brings in more sales than it loses by alienating these people.

I don't know.  The bait and Switch thing worked in Fury Road but it worked there because it was a good movie.  The lesson they learned was that a putting a popular character's name on a movie will bring in people even if the movie isn't actually about that character.  That's how you get crap like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Who Gives a Shit.  The lesson they should have learned is that people will go to see a good movie.  People didn't go see Fury Road because it has female lead.  They went to see it because it's good.

Judging by the market performance of products that lean heavily into the outrage marketing, they are not.  They leaned into this heavily with The Little Mermaid remake and it bombed.  They did it again with the Peter Pan remake.  They have been doing it since Ghostbusters (2016) bombed.  The results have been getting progressively worse.

I don't know if Pundy talking about something on his channel makes the slightest bit of difference.  It's unlikely that the OSR crowd that buys his stuff was going to buy WotC's latest rainbow flag offering anyway.

I don't believe that it generates more revenue than it loses either.  They have a habit of alienating their core audience in pursuit of an audience that largely exists in their imagination.  They have yet to catch on to the fact that people talking about something on social media does not necessarily translate into revenue.

To get back on topic...

I thought making Skeletor an incel was absolutely ridiculous. He's what the internet calls a justicebody ("just his body"). Put a bag on his head and women will line up.

He commands a literal army of gangsters.  He obviously has money. He is powerful.  He can do real MAGIC.  His face will not  slow his getting ladies at all.  Women love badboys with jack shit for money...one that is loaded, commands an army and can do magic?  His dance card is full 24/7

Quote from: Chris24601 on February 06, 2024, 03:16:15 PMIt does raise the question for me of where to draw the line on "forgiveness" (not forgetting what has been done... nor giving them a pass if they fail to keep it up) in the sense that if you keep withholding the incentive for the subject to change their behavior after they've changed is that counterproductive to the goal of getting more of the people in entertainment to change course?

I mean, my deep suspicion is that Mattel basically put their foot down in light of the brand damage inflicted being the ACTUAL reason for the 180, but given all the prior times these things have just doubled down on stupid it felt noteworthy.

It's a valid question, and a far-reaching one.

These people wore my childhood like a skinsuit and used it to propagate left-wing propaganda. Fuck them. Not only that, when fans complained, the writers, artists, actors, and so forth went onto all the social media platforms they could find to insult the fans who kept these franchises alive for so long by calling them every kind of istophobic in the book.

Forgiveness requires a lot more than releasing one solid B- project. The time for that is long gone. That could have earned forgiveness had the creators not done the, "Let's call the fans istophobic," social media tour. Now forgiveness requires something else. It requires a full-throated denunciation of the very propaganda they attempted to spread.

Let's not kid ourselves, it was an attempt to indoctrinate children into left-wing ideology. These franchises (He-Man, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Marvel/DC Comics, etc.) were specifically chosen because we remember them from our childhood and think fondly of them, and therefore would allow our children to watch them. I don't think it ever even occurred to most of the creators that we might watch ourselves.

Forgiveness is earned, and earning forgiveness is proportional to the crime committed. A bad TV show can be forgiven by releasing a good one, and moving on. Outrage marketing and blatant propaganda requires something else. They can be forgiven, but first the creators must go on the same social media platforms they previously insulted fans on, and then they have to say something that will get them pilloried by the social justice left. There are a variety of things they could say, but for brevity, some version of, "Donald Trump is not a nazi," would probably work. Then they have to eat the left-wing backlash for their apostasy. They must eat this left-wing backlash without trying to equivocate or backpedal. They must do this, and they must do this first. Then, and only then, is forgiveness on the table.

Is anybody even watching the show?

I think it may play into a lesser used marketing obsession that did the rounds for a bit.

"Fans are bad. We need to get rid of them and collect new fans. Rinse-repeat."

It is so anti-marketing that they must be hiring complete sociopaths anymore to come up with these mental diseases.

As predicted. Not one bit. One step forward, if it was even that. Ten steps back.

It's too bad they didn't renew the cgi cartoon. It actually felt like it had the spirit of He-Man.

Agreed. A much better take, one that has women doing heroic things without making the titular hero a complete twat.

Apparently Disney's "brilliant" plan for Marvel movies is to bring back Downy... not as Iron Man.... But as... Doctor Doom.

I was wrong. Disney takes one step forward and one-hundred back. There is no way he is going to keep the mask on for more than 30 sec at a time. If even that.

Wanna bet it's a multiverse BS where Tony becomes Dr Doom? IIRC there was either a What If? or a miniseries where exactly that happens.

The MCU should have ended at the first Avengers movie. They mined all the good stuff from the comics at that point.
I can understand following through with Infinity War and Endgame, since that's the big metastory they'd been building towards. But by then I was thoroughly burned out on the MCU and didn't care anymore.

Now they're mining the dregs of the comic stories for more content (and making their own crap) and it shows. The Multiverse and What If angle is creative desperation.
IMO the reason Deadpool and Wolverine is so popular is because they've hit the bottom of the barrel and all that's left is crumbs and/or parody.
