This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

In the 4E MM they slapped boobs on just about everything. Wondering if 5E will find a way to make it even worse.

Quote from: Chris24601 on June 20, 2024, 12:43:47 PMNot Native Americans... Mexicans, and stereotypical ones at that; sombreros, one with a handlebar mustache right out of central casting, barefoot kid in a poncho, banderas, clearly Southwestern North American desert region.

This seems most probable, but between the paleness of skin and WotC's general tendencies, I suspect they might be going for "19th century American pioneers colonizers" as a variant for evil NPC orcs.

Quote from: Eric Diaz on June 19, 2024, 09:34:59 PM6e is going to be the 2e of 5e.

The rules might improve slightly, but it will be so bowdlerized that people will think "this is D&D for kids".

And I LIKE 2e!

Worth reflecting on.

What were the two biggest critiques of 2e that people say led to D&D losing its luster by the 90's?

First: 2e got rid of all the 'edgy" 1e content and art. They made changes to the game to make it more palatable to the Karens of the era. This was viewed at the time as making D&D a 'kids game' compared to the newer RPG's that were coming out in the late 80's early 90's.

Second: 2e started releasing a lot of different settings, and while some sold well, most did not. While some of these settings like Dark Sun enjoy a kind of cult status, spamming out settings was seen in hindsight as something that fractured the buyer base, with people no longer able or wanting to buy TSR's regular releases.

Wotc has now done both of these for 5e...

The tweeification of D&D has clearly been thrown into high-gear, as evidenced by the recent lore changes and art previews.

Wotc has also shown their lack of direction by releasing several "settings" in succession, especially in recent years:

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide     2015
Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica   2018
Acquisitions Incorporated  2019
Eberron: Rising from the Last War  2019
Explorer's Guide to Wildemount   2020
Mythic Odysseys of Theros  2020
Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft  2021
Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos 2021
Spelljammer: Adventures in Space 2022
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen  2022
Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse  2023

All released to ever dwindling sales and quality. Even the diehard 5e shills were not impressed with Wotc's efforts from Spelljammer onwards.

Wotc is making the same old mistakes, just in slightly newer ways...

Pay close attention to the mastectomy scars.

That's actually extremely troubling...these clowns are injecting their own fucked up mental illnesses onto a fantasy realm where you can cast a spell and change sex. Why the hell would you chop off your tits if you can just pay money and turn into an actual dude? What the literal fuck...

Yeah. It sounded like a marketing guy telling you how this year's new car is a totally new redesign, from the bottom up, all these new features and options never seen before, yada yada.

I really doubt the new edition is anything but a low effort reskin/repackage with 10% more cowbell.

They don't have the game designers to do much.  I heard they hired some guys from Paizo to help them redo their racial stats and clone Paizo's character builder without them getting sued.

WotC's ability to write content and create rules is the same as Disney's ability to create a good movie, non-existent.

The core 5E rules good, guide to eberron was the only setting book they did a good job on and everything else was a cash grab.

Quote from: Chris24601 on June 20, 2024, 06:44:42 AMWait, I thought they'd already changed up elves so they could just shift genders every day

Wait, did they do that? Leaving out the SJW motivation, there's actually some weird fantasy potential in the idea of a race that can shift its biological sex. You could seriously fuck with players' heads.

Yeah its a thing on 5e. Change gender on a long rest. One of the expansion books made it official. Only some elves can do it though. Not all apparently if I remember right. I'm not digging out the books to find out as its not worth it.

And just to push the good ol agenda. Its also pointed out in the Adventurer's League players rules.

It's an option that some elves may have, as Omega notes, that's in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, called "Blessing of Corellon".

It refers to the leader of the elven pantheon, Corellon Larethian, who is described as "alternatively male or female, both or neither". That part isn't new, though - the text is from Deities & Demigods (1980).

Wow. That IG vid was painful.

I guess it would be a pretty big problem now to build a wall around a city to keep the orcs out, huh?

WOTC in 2024 trying to explain how the barbarian's raging strength is now a benefit for stealth...

"the idea is exactly that the barbarian while their rage is going has so much control over their own selves"

In case it doesn't start at the correct time, it's 6:05..

Lol, the guy interviewing the WOTC person reminds me of the Red Letter Media youtube parody of Collider when he is responding to everything with "that's perfect... I love this".

It is Todd Kenreck (years ago was the content manager for DnD Beyond). He works for WotC so this is 100% completely scripted.
