Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Well this is supposed to go live today.

Just this little preview before that speaks volumes about how much wotc and Perkins have lied. Still 5e my ass.

I mean... is there anyone who with a straight face can honestly say they are surprised? We all saw this coming, and here it is. Yep.

Noticed the battle wheelchair?

All those who cried it wasn't in the official game can gargle my balls.

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

I guess they had to find some way to get people to buy the new books.

Greetings!

Yes, I noticed the BS wheelchair too!

And yes, *Laughing*--we both know who always cries about the combat wheelchair not being in the game. *Laughing*

You know these depraved fuckers in WOTC are just clapping their hands and giggling like little retarded girls thinking about fully detailing and embracing the fucking combat wheelchair for D&D. There it is, right there in official, glorious fucking Player's Handbook artwork!

These people are so pathetic. *Laughing*

For trying to prove incompatibility I'd suggest a different link than that video.

That was just a pile of marketing buzzwords, but I saw zero mechanics presented in that video (nor any link to any; just a note of something tomorrow at 7am you could set a notification for)... and admittedly I have not followed D&Done to know what mechanics are changing relative to 5e, but nothing in that particular video says it's not going to be compatible with 5e's mechanics.

Woke as f**k politics and cheap AI-looking art (which was on full display with the video) =/= mechanical widgets are incompatible with c. AD 2014 5e mechanics.

I'm all for ragging on WotC, but there are real things to do that about. Using a video that doesn't even show some sign of incompatibility to claim incompatibility just makes the anti-WotC position less credible.

For the record, I expect the art and fluff to be so woke that even last year's Wokester would say "woah, tone it down", but what little I'd read is that mechanically they'd largely reverted every major change and its more like the 1e to 2e sort of revisions (pretty much entirely useable together).

I have no plans to buy the newest version any more than I did 5e, if there's something I missed about some massive mechanical change that's coming, please explain or link me to a broader explanation... because that Instagram video isn't it.

Exploderwizard

Mechanically, I believe this craptastic revision will be very similar to 5E for the simple reason that WOTC fired everyone who had a clue about useful game design. If they did a complete mechanical re-design then it will be an unplayable catastrophe. I think the base mechanics will be 5E driven but as BS propaganda driven as they could possibly make it, because that is all that they know how to do.

I honestly don't care at all. WotC lost my support many years ago. So I'll take the Instagram video exactly for what it is - messaging without substance. But that's the whole point of their methodology. WE are not who they are catering to. They have made their calculation with their audience. Let them reap their harvest accordingly. They don't *want* our money.

Well that's easy.

Yeah. It sounded like a marketing guy telling you how this year's new car is a totally new redesign, from the bottom up, all these new features and options never seen before, yada yada.

I really doubt the new edition is anything but a low effort reskin/repackage with 10% more cowbell.

I liked the black wizard girl with a white afro and glasses. If that's not cosplay pandering bullshit I don't know what is.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

That's it.  My next D&D campaign will be a fantasy Incan setting with hookers and blow.  And, they have not invented the wheel as a means of transportation.  :-D

For anyone who wants to read the actual article the video is hyping... here it is.

https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1745-whats-new-in-the-2024-players-handbook

Other than switching where the attribute buffs come from to the backgrounds it sounds like this stuff will be useable at the same table as 5e c.2014. They shuffled where the numbers come from to appease the Current Year Woke, but it sounds like the final numbers will be the same as 5e.

Basically a giant "Meh" excuse to resell all the core books to those who "need" the latest thing to feel special.

ForgottenF

You can really tell that a lot of the people in the business/marketing end of WOTC now are people with more experience in videogames than in tabletop. "So many features, subclasses, spells, options!", as opposed to a concern for streamlining or ease of play. No stated concern for compatibility, and even this hybrid approach to editions strikes me as video-gamey. "Of course we don't do editions! D&D is an evergreen game (because we don't use the words 'live service' anymore); we wouldn't want you to think you have to change to a new game (because then you might think about changing to someone else's game); We want to reward all the effort you've put into your 5e campaigns (that is, encourage a sunk-cost fallacy). This is just like a big patch (that you have to pay for) for the game your already love!"

In material terms: Yeah, it looks like they're just compiling material from prior supplements into the Player's Handbook with some minor revisions and additions. If so, then depending on what they're charging, that's actually not a bad value proposition for the narrow market of new 5e players who haven't already bought Tasha's and Xanathar's. If this wasn't current year WOTC --and therefore guaranteed to F*** it up somehow--, I'd say it looks like doing a 5e version of the Rules Cyclopedia, which isn't a terrible idea.
