This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I know we have a few folks from Minnesota on this forum - you and yours all OK? My condolences from those of us in Illinois. Anybody need anything? I heard resources, at this point, are not an issue...

Count me in as a wellwisher. Hearing the story live on MPR thirty minutes after it happened was surreal. Hope you and yours are all safe and sound.

Yeah, best wishes from here, too.  Hope all our friends up that way, and their family and friends, are all ok.  Our thoughts are with you guys...

I would have been in the middle of that if I hadn't decided to stay and work late lastnight.

I travel that road frequently and I can say that their estimate of 30 dead might be low. The part of the bridge that fell was 2000 feet long and it was bumper-to-bumper traffic. There could be as many as 150-200 cars on that bridge during rushhour.

They say that 50 cars are still submerged.

Huge, huge mess. I've seen a fair bit of shows and such on engineering (bridges, actually) lately on the History Channel and such. Looking at the remains of the bridge, I'm having a hard time seeing how ALL sections could have fallen, but then its hard to tell what it looked like before the collapse. It obviously wasn't a suspension bridge...

At any rate, here's hoping that the death toll stays low, although 1 is too many.

(Edit: Okay, I've seen video of the actual collapse - there were no supports of any type under the main span, I think its a "box-girder" bridge design? so that explains why it all went in the river I guess. Nasty...)

What happened? Sounds awfully nasty.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

A major linchpin of the local transportation infrastructure, the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River, collapsed yesterday at about 6:05 pm.  This is during the evening Rush Hour period, but the bridge was under restricted traffic flow due to maintenance being done.  Scores of cars and trucks fell into the river, there are four confirmed dead and a score or so more still missing and now presumed to be dead also.

I'm fine.  I work in downtown Minneapolis about a mile and a half or so from where it happened, but I live in the other direction.

Thanatos02

Damn. It's a shame so many people were hurt.

I'm also kinda surprised by the amount of Minnesota peeps here.
