This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mesopotamia RPG?

Anybody tried using this for a setting? Sticking with the BC side of history, which period or region/cities would you use? Sumer? Akkad? Babylon? Assyria? Would it be "Gilgamesh the RPG"?

Thornhammer

You might check out Sorcerers of Ur-Turuk for some inspiration.

It is not a straight historical setting, but worth a look.

Pre- or Post- Late Bronze Age collapse? The former gets you the great ancient empires; the latter is called Testament. Green Ronin, IIRC?

You're answering my question with another question? :P

Not by intent. :)

If you want post-LBA Collapse, the game Testament is focused on that era. I think it was from Green Ronin, but I am not sure.

If you want pre-Collapse, that's where the great ancient empires are. That could be "Gilgamesh the RPG", yes. I think there was a Mythic Mesopotamia supplement in the old d20 days that might provide a different take on the pre-Collapse era.

Sorry for the lack of details. I don't have my digital library handy at the moment.

I guess I wasn't so much asking how to do it (zero gaming going on for me right now), as wondering what others have been doing, if they have tried it. Just curious.

Mythic Mesopotamia, yes that does ring a bell.

We have Mythic Babylon in the works (art being assigned and layout about to begin) for Mythras. We also have a podcast detailing the content of the book, and the approach taken by the authors. It's set in the 18th Century BC, and focuses on Sumer, Akkad and Subartu.

La puerta de Ishtar if I remember correctly is a sword and sandal game in such a setting, but it's in Spanish, not sure if it was released in English.

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Hex Games do a Gilgamesh rpg. I don't have it so can't say if its any good, but I do have their Hobomancer rpg and that's done pretty well. And the QAGS system is currently free (you need it for their games).

I've started working on an OSE - B/X Fantasy Sumerain sandbox setting. Haven't got much done yet just some design notes on the thousands of gods (who are built like supers) and some wacky conversions of the B/X vanilla 7 classes to Sumerian counterparts. It's called Gods of the Seven Cities. The campaign pitch is D&D zeroes to heroes party vs Supers. I can post blog links to the notes and classes if anyone is interested.

I play in my own S&S setting which spans Bronze Age to Antiquity level tech. I liberally borrow from several time periods and cultures. (It's set in Southeast Asia during the last Ice Age)

I'm not educated enough about the time period to be able to make distinction between the Sumerians, Akkadian, Assyrians or Babylonians, so it's a mixture of various tropes.

City states
Large monuments
Wilderness beyond the cities where beasts and monsters roam.
Enslaved peoples
Capricious gods
Society split into castes
Priest kings/queens
Observing and reading the motions of the stars
Small armies, ritual combat
Merchants travel far for precious goods

Some of the games I use to mine ideas:

Blood & Bronze: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/173051/Blood--Bronze-rules

Babylon On Which Fame and Jubilation Are Bestowed (2nd Edition): https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/304978/Babylon-On-Which-Fame-and-Jubilation-Are-Bestowed-2nd-Edition
Sword & Sorcery in Southeast Asia during the last Ice Age: https://sundaland-rpg-setting.blogspot.com/ Lots of tools and resources to build your own setting.
