This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D Twitter is a Garbage-Filled Wasteland

So in my latest video I point out how D&D Twitter is a garbage-filled wasteland of noise over signal. I blame 5e fans and tumblrinas for this, and suggest an alternative.

So, do you think it was the chicken or the egg.  Is 5e produced in such a way that it attracts players who aren't interested in making content?  Or are people who want canned content just drawn to 5e?  As a 5e GM who likes home-brewing stuff, I'm curious.

All social media is a garbage filled wasteland. Finding value is like digging in a landfill.

On rare occasion, you find a wondrous pearl! But mostly you're just wading through trash.

That's no landfill, that's a bowel you're digitally disimpacting. There's no pearls either, just some kernels of undigested white corn. Some people think it's awesome and try to paint pictures with it, but most people know it's just shit.

For you it's an adventure, for me it was the 6e pdf...:(

Setting out the punchbowls of dice, sighing. :o I guess one more ride on the (Logan's Run) carousel.

(I kinda wish I was employed by Twitter, just so I could shock corporate by still not using it personally -- and get paid regardless. :p)
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Social media like twitter & facebook just doesn't lend itself to the creation of useful game content IME.

5e D&D fans - well they tend to be newbies and unsure what to do. Not that different from many new D&D fans in the early '80s, who just played the official TSR modules. They may be less gear-heady than older generations & less interested in crunch. Many want "The Criticial Role Experience" - but most just want to play some D&D. There tends to be a shortage of DMs and a ton of people looking to play.

One of my biggest turn-offs to Eclipse Phase is that your character lives and dies by their in-game social media reputation and involvement. Some parts of the setting are very interesting to me, but that cornerstone of it definitely is not.

You could remove the word D&D from the title and still be right

Do people actually read Twitter beyond the NPC responses to Trump's tweets? I'm being 100% serious; it seems like the only reason that platform remains afloat is due to manufactured outrage over something the president said.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

I've never used Twitter, or whatever other similar platforms I've easily forgotten the names of.  I never had any interest in MySpace, and i have seen very little value in my very limited foray into the Facebook data collective.

I have always preferred the internet forum model, personally; and I have replaced 99% of my tv time with YouTube.

I scroll across a couple of news websites every day, but otherwise; I am a forum user.
I need you to roll a perception check.....

Yeah, I also do not understand the popularity of twitter. I am astounded that a lot of ttrpg folks use it for their discussions of ttrpgs. Twitter is sooo not made for any form of convenient discussion.

On top of that, there are sooo sooo many entitled minorities on the little blue bird (and other people who are just entitled) that think that the old guard that kept the hobby alive before it was "cool" now just should "hand it over" so that they can make money with it *eyes rolling* . I mean seriously, the hobby does not owe you shit, people! If you want to make a career in ttrpgs, work for it, damn it. All those folks that are successful now have worked for it. So why do those hipster assholes think we just hand it all to them?
And no, that's not gatekeeping! If you have something worthwhile to share, that you worked for, you are welcome no matter who you are (PoC, LGBTQAI etc etc). But no, we do not owe you shit...we don't have to invite you to our streams, we don't have to hire you for anything, we don't need your consulting on any matter etc etc. . If you are one of those "content creators"/assholes, fuck right off.

And no, Pundit, this has nothing to do with 5e. 5e is just fine (you should know, you consulted on it :P ). Fuck all that OSR bullshit noise...it's not the best version of DnD.

I think Pundit's feeling the sting of having been cast aside and see the product line and community go in directions he didn't want, made all the worse by having had some influence for a moment. It happened to me with Dragonlance, it happened to me as a fan with other things (D&D, Star Wars, Star Trek), and it seems to have been happening to a bunch of fans to greater and lesser degrees, as well as with many portions of greater society.

Twitter is a "social" media platform designed expressly around the core tenets of propaganda, general disinformation, corporate idol worship, hysteria  and  rampant  shitposting. I have no idea why anyone would go there expecting fruitful or informative conversation whatsoever, particularly on a topic even remotely nuanced like roleplaying games.
