This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Godzilla Anime Trilogy

Quote from: Pat;1086322I don't think Chik-Fil-A or Hobby Lobby publish anime, so which corporations are involved? Because this is the entertainment industry, and I'd be shocked and dumbfounded if any major publisher was promoting extremist right wing views. Or even mildly religious views, for that matter.

With translation of foreign movies this happens a lot. It's unbelievably common. And the people who have seen it the most often are fans of Japanese scifi and tokusatsu. With Anime coming in a close second.

I've been a Godzilla fan since the 1970's. So none of this is new to me. It was almost a nature of the medium for the movies to be butchered for US audiences.

I have since collected Japanese versions of most of my Godzilla collection. And I prefer to sit through the subtitles. Rather than dealing with the horrendously butchered dubbing.

Quote from: Spinachcat;1086328Sorry, I'm still confused.

LOTS of movies are anti-religion. Many movies are specific to which religion they are targeting. Many of these movies have been on Netflix. Netflix has a regular flow of comedians who shit on religions, shit on believers and celebrate atheism, and many who specifically shit on Christians and none of that is edited whatsoever.

And yanking out a core movie concept will certainly ruin the flow of everything. What a shame because that sounded like an interesting plot. It's a similar plot to a couple of concept albums by the metal band ICED EARTH about aliens who manipulated human history to erase humanity's true origins.

There's a story underneath this censorship mess. I wonder who actually authorized the hatchet job and why.

Foreign movies have always been treated weirdly and highly censored in the United States. Especially movies of Japanese origin.

ICED EARTH sounds like it would appeal to me. Since i'm a major metal fan.

Which corporations are censoring anime to promote extreme right wing religious views? I've asked 3 times, and you just keep making broad, sensational assertions while refusing to ground your claims about this malign influence with any specifics. That makes everything you say sound like a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theory.

I wonder if the distributor hacked the movie before handing it to Netflix out of misplaced fear.

I fully agree there is a long history of weird edits to foreign movies. I was a Dario Argento fan and his horror movies were butchered worse than his monster's victims when they came to the USA on VHS. I was lucky enough to see original Italian prints at LA revival houses over the years, and the differences were notable.

But it was weird. Some foreign movies came through intact with CRAZY SHIT intact, and then others were chopped to bits.

Iced Earth are good band, but not an innovative one. Their sound is "heavy Iron Maiden" and they've gone through several lead singers, including Ripper Owens who did two albums with Judas Priest before Rob Halford returned from his hiatus. I've seen them several times live and they put on a solid show.

The video is truly and bizarrely terrible, but the song rocks.

I've noticed that occasionally, and I always suspected it was pre-emptive self-censorship based on stereotypes. I.e. cutting stuff you think might worry a culture you don't really understand.

Dude! It's embarassing widespread! Name any american distributor of the Godzilla movies, and they have done it! Even fricking HBO! Which translated and distributed Godzilla vs. Biolannte. Which was heavily christianized by them when it was released.

It's not just a few companies. it's nearly every bleeding one!

Only a very few companies in the era of the DVD have managed to avoid the history of censorship surrounding these movies.

I'm a huge Judas Priest and Iron Maiden fan. I got the Judas Priest Complete Album Collection a couple of birthdays ago.

Yeah. So Iced Earth is definitely up my alley.

And it's all this extremist right wing religious conspiracy?

Sure, nutjob.

I'm not accusing any political group of anything. Censorship is wrong. No matter who does it and for what cause.

They are on tour in the USA this spring/summer. http://judaspriest.com/tour/

They have been absolutely on fire with their new album. It's crazy how this ancient band rocks so hard live. I'm in the pit for the LA show with Uriah Heep opening which is gonna be truly incredible.

Sure you did:
Quote from: Darrin Kelley;1086265The reason for the censorship? It was clearly to avoid offending certain religious groups in the United States.
Quote from: Darrin Kelley;1086320Whatever ones the corporations doing it have a bias toward. Censorship of this type is done in such broad strokes. That it tries to avoiding offense to anyone.

I still own a copy of Godzilla vs Biolannte where the translation was written with clear western religious elements being dominant. To try to crush and eclipse the philosophy that was central to that movie in that translation.

It isn't new. And the only people such hatchet-jobs favor are religious extremists.

I have their new album on CD, on my computer, and even on my phone. I listen to it quite obsessively. There are a lot of songs on that album I just absolutely love.

Pat: The moment you resorted to name calling was the moment you lost the ability to speak to me in any manner.

You do not have the right to interrogate me. And you do not have the right to make any kinds of demands of me at all.

My answering anyone is a courtesy. Something that can and will be revoked at any time.

Freedom of speech doesn't give you the right to be abusive toward anyone. You are facing big boy consequences now for your own actions.

That's hilarious. I'm facing no consequences at all. I called you a nutjob, once, after you made a conspiracy claim, then repeatedly avoided the subject when you were challenged, and lied about what you said. Now you're using that one word as an excuse to continue to avoid the subject by pretending to be a victim, while making statements about freedom of speech that show you have no idea what the concept even means. You are free to tell people "no I'm not talking to you" while talking to them at length; hypocrisy is protected. You also don't have to answer questions, or reply. But if you do so, you are withdrawing from the conversion, or engaging in deceptive rhetorical tactics. Which again are protected, even though they aren't a positive contribution. But while you can tell people they have no right to talk, enforcing it would be a severe violation of freedom of speech, nor does that natural right protect you in any way from mean words. This was initiated and exacerbated by you. I didn't let it go, but I also didn't significantly escalate it, and I have no idea why you resurrected it. It's been 3 days. If you had stopped replying, at any stage, I would have dropped it.

I am not your human toilet. Fuck off!
