This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Apparition

Twitch/Amazon sold Curse Media (owners of D&D Beyond and Gamepedia) to Fandom/Wikia.  That's... not great news for D&D Beyond.

QuoteWe are excited to announce that Fandom and Curse Media are joining forces! Curse's network includes properties like their wiki services Gamepedia, D&D Beyond, Futhead, and Muthead. By coming together, Fandom and Curse Media solidify our exciting new venture as the #1 online experience for entertainment and gaming fan communities.

For years, Fandom and Curse Media have shared a common mission: to provide online tools and resources for communities in the entertainment and gaming spaces. By joining forces and combining knowledge, we are able to expand our resources and provide better support to our communities.

It mostly seems to be about combining Wikia and Gamepedia.  No mention of D&D Beyond in the press announcement at all, which is not a good sign.

MonsterSlayer

Why is it not great news? Honestly I have no opinion but do not claim to know enough to understand that conclusion. I didn't know Amazon owned any part of that.
Please expand.

Because their sites look terrible, and are absolutely inundated with advertisements, including auto-play video advertisements. On Wikia's community support forums (not Wikia itself mind you), it has connections going out to

That is absolutely obnoxious.

Out of curiosity, I went to one of Wikia's wikis at random. With uBlock Origin and Privacy Possum, it looked fine. I then whitelisted the page on uBlock Origin and Privacy Possum, and reloaded. It's been over two minutes now and the page is still loading. When it eventually loads, it will be covered with advertisements.

Omega

Yeah wikia is getting even more useless than it was before. It is a total pain in the ass to find anything on a wiki.

Anon Adderlan

Wikia's modus operandi is to do as little work as possible to dominate the search results for a brand and steal traffic from the official sites in order to present as many ads as possible. And while Goggle has gotten wise to this play, it's still not perfect.

And to think I went into computing to get away from advertising.

Graewulf

I don't and won't ever use anything online to play my tabletop games (RPG or board/card), so I couldn't care less.

Paraguybrarian

I'm actually surprised that Hasbro would have agreed to a contract that allowed a limited licensee's rights to transfer to a successor (without significant renegotiation).

Good for you?

danskmacabre

I'd forgotten about DnD beyond.
That's some sort of Digital character manager right?
I had a bit of a look ages ago and lost interest when I was expected to create a Twitch account.
Was it very successful?

RPGPundit

It's funny because there must be tons of people who use D&D Beyond. And yet, I don't know a single person who does.
