This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Fantasy settings in far northern Europe, very late viking / post viking era?

I am aware of Mythic Iceland, I've been waiting for the 2nd ed to be released. Sounds like it would be quite useful particularly in combination with Crusaders of the Amber Coast.

A trip to Norway is high on my list of future places to visit. I have friends in Denmark, so the bulk of this trip was seeing that country.

There's been some stuff for Scandinavia, and some stuff for Russia, but I think something that's seriously missing in the RPG world is a good setting book for central-eastern Europe; the Slavic countries west of Russia.

True, Pundit. The setting of the computer game Kingdom Come: Deliverance (Bohemia 1403) would make a nice sourcebook. Accurate or not I don't pretend to know, but it's certainly detailed enough for a real rpg.

The interest to me in the region and period (after more careful examination probably best represented 1000-1200AD) is the relatively peaceful co-existence of Christians and pagans along with substantial trade between Scandinavia and the coastal nations on the Baltic coast (modern Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Finland). You also have the meeting between the Eastern and Western "Roman" empires (Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire) with these pagan kingdoms squeezed in between. Throw in some mythological critters, a little magic and it sounds like a good time.

It all starts to fall apart in the late 1100s as the Christian kingdoms start to go after their pagan neighbors and the Pope officially calls for the Northern crusades in 1195 which continue for 2 centuries.

If I ever did a regional sourcebook for L&D/Albion that wasn't set in England/Albion, it would almost certainly be in the Polish Commonwealth/Hungary/Wallachia.

Closest I can think of are The Dragon And The Bear for Ars Magica 4E and Against The Dark for Ars Magica 5E. Obviously they're heavy with Ars setting material, but they could be mined as a starting point.

Quote from: Spinachcat;1057179Do it!! I'd love to see an Eastern European fantasy setting.

It might happen, eventually. I don't know if it would be as popular as Medieval-Authentic Fantasy England was, though.
