Yeah, I don't like checkbox systems much, for this reason. Even bugs me a bit in Skyrim. I like D&D type "kill orcs to improve your Smithing" XP :)

Another thing is that a player might get irritated if their character doesn't have the "opportunity" to mark off a checkbox.

Might be a problem.  It might not.

Probably not an issue with my players (wife, sister-in-law, and best friend), but I can see that as good feedback for a system for others and probably a good warning/disclaimer/suggestion. Thanks!

For live RPGs, does it work better for you with a GM that gives you the opportunities to checkbox?

I'm picturing a mission being the module we're playing. Modules usually take 4-5+ sessions to complete. At which point, I might as well go with "complete the mission and advance" except I like the "role-play your character every session" checkbox.

I wonder if there is an easier formula.

Maybe take a number of adventures equal to their prof bonus to get to the next level, with "easy" adventures counting as a fraction?

However, if you want to keep the usual charts and XP for killing monsters, your formula seems very reasonable.

I definitely have keeping the existing charts as a goal. Players like using the rules in the book, and it allows for PCs to transfer between tables, which is a goal of my Meetup design. I also like PCs of varying level depending on what they've done.

I currently use the standard monster XP in 5e but I have been all over the place on this, in OSR/pre-3e D&D I generally use more of a 100 XP/hd formula like that in OD&D pre-Greyhawk. Yesterday I didn't use standard monster XP for the cockatrices the PCs fought, I gave them XP based on the level they were on. They were on level 5 and ended up with 1000 XP for a 2.5 hour session of mostly exploration, they got a a good bit of loot.
