This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Other non-D&D "OSR" retro-games

Wow, that's quite a few retro clones I've never heard of! Thanks, guys.

Is there a place online where retro clones hang out, or do they just inhabit specialized groups on Google+?

Reason I ask is because I'm writing a Cyberpunk "heartbreaker" and I'd love to get some design tips from people familiar with that game. Do people discuss non-D&D games here a lot?

For games like Rifts, Cyberpunk 2020, Top Secret and other semi-abandoned or stagnant games that history has left behind?

I would say yes, but the context is decidedly different. Of course, since no one can agree on what the OSR means for D&D, comparing and contrasting that with other TTRPGs becomes akin to two people discussing whether to paint a room mauve or taupe, even though neither is exactly clear on what the other thinks those colors are.

Suffice to say there are many fans of other initially-published-a-while-ago games with none-to-little official continuing support, and no small number of them have gotten the retroclone treatment.

People certainly discuss non-D&D TTRPGs here. No small few number of people here never play any version of D&D anymore. As to Cyberpunk, a lot of us have played it. A few people do and at least two (Tenbones and... nope, can't remember) I think have strong affection for it.

Quote from: Krimson;1041399G-Core is another FASERIP clone, and the Star Frontiers one is called Frontier Space I think.

You mean FrontierSpace from DwD Studios? Bill is currently working on updating their website, but the DTRPG page is: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/3515/DwD-Studios/subcategory/5972_28783/FrontierSpace

We play-tested it. Too crunchy for my group, but a lot of fun and pretty flexible.

Uh well Rifts got a Savage Worlds conversion, but Rifts books are still in print so there isn't much to "revive".

Quote from: Larsdangly;1041402In addition to the retroclones noted above, Steve Jackson FINALY recovered the rights to this property and is a couple months away from releasing newly produced versions. It will be amazing and everyone here should throw fistfulls of cash at him when it arrives.
Neat! Looks like the new The Fantasy Trip by Steve Jackson is almost complete:

>Work goes on! Melee, Wizard, and the two Death Tests are in final layout, Tollenkar's Lair is close, and I'm making progress on the big book that takes in Advanced Melee, Advanced Wizard, and ITL. Not sure yet what I'm going to call that . . .

Cyberpunk 2020 is going to get a Cyberpunk 2077 relaunch, but it will be after The Witcher RPG.

Talislanta has Talislanta: The Savage Lands Which is in PDF in native system, 5e D&D, and D6. Then it will go into print.

I can't help but be a Debbie Downer on that point.

Pondsmith doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation of delivering.

The last RPG product I can recall him being involved in and actually seeing release was Cyberpunk V3.  That was 2006.  Does anyone know of anything more recent?

The Witcher RPG has been used as an excuse for something like 4 years now.  At this point it really seems like another Gundam Senki.

While not a heartbreaker based on the Cyberpunk rpg, Paul Elliot did write Zaibatsu, which uses a slimmed down version of Cepheus Engine (which is a sort of retro clone of Mong Traveller). And it's old school setting wise, using tech styles you would see in sci-fi in the 80's, etc. I've only skimmed it so far, but what I have read looks good. Then again, I like pretty much everything I've gotten Paul wrote for CE

My default system for my Post Cyberpunk Urban Fantasy game was Cortex Plus Heroic. Since I have been waiting about five years for an SRD (Cortex Prime will happen any month now. >.<), Cepheus engine seems like a pretty nifty base. I had even played with taking the Cortex Plus mechanics and applying them to a 2d6 mechanic, which makes the system even more attractive. I like the idea of shifting my setting away from the fantasy elements and closer to science fiction as well. I'll have to take a look at Zaibatsu.

...I don't think RIFTS actually fits that description.

True Black Raven

I wouldn't describe anything not based on or related to old school D&D or old school TSR (pre WotC) as OSR. All of that non-TSR stuff needs to get its own name.

Nerzenjäger

Hardly, yeah. A game with its own yearly convention and several books being published for per year.

There's Spooktacular, a recreation of the original Ghostbusters RPG.

I'm admittedly biased, but the new Pacesetter stuff being released by Goblinoid Games is pretty nifty. I would consider Cryptworld as an OSR retroclone of Chill 1e, without a doubt.
