This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;1038096If EPT had been released in India about 1980 I bet they'd have been all over it.

Yes, they would have, according to what I've been told by people who come from there. However, multiculturalism was dead-on-arrival back in those days, as Dave Arneson so aptly demonstrated when he turned down the anime / Robotech license with the words: "Nobody will ever write a game based on Japanese robots."

Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;1038097You mean like the assclown in the Tolkien thread who claimed that horses are a Tolkien trope, despite admitting he'd never actually read Lord of the Rings?

Sometimes, "fatuous" doesn't seem a strong enough word.

I went back over to that thread and looked it over. It did make me laugh, considering how many times Tekumel has been called "weird and inaccessible". I do wonder what they'd make of Barsoom over there on that side of the room... :)

In truth I suspect a return to short novels with large type would help with the reading.  Too much modern fantasy is in the two inch thick range.

Simple words would help, too; most of the gamers I meet don't have a third of the vocabulary that I do. Add in that most of the time they have a pretty rudimentary education in topics like history, and conversations can get to be difficult.

Found this on line, and thought that you might like a trip down memory lane. Recognise anyone in the pictures?

Enjoy,

Shemek

First pic, person on the far left leaning over is none other than Dave Wesley.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Yep. I knew / know Dave W. , Dave A., and Ray Allard. I got Ray's UK railway books.

Man, I am glad dress codes have changed. I wouldn't want to wear a tie to wargame.

Now whether dress codes have gone too far the other way, that is another question.

Cardigans and pipes; that's what Real Serious Gamers have. :)

And people think I'm weird for having suits of armor... :)

It is a little formal, isn't it?

Cardigans, anyway. :D Not much into smoking these days, after quitting a 2 pack a day habit a few years ago, and not missing it in the slightest! Unfortunately, Yes, I have become that ex-smoker.

I knew some wargamers that wore Shako's when they played. Weirdness is a matter of perspective...

Shemek.

Look at model railroading magazines from the 40s and 50s.  Modelers dressed like that in their basements, and when visiting the club they added a suitcoat and a hat.

I am pretty sure men were legally required to wear a hat when in public until the late 50's/early 60's.

According to my grandpa (who would have been born in '17), there were a whole bunch of exceptions that tv and film fail to bring up (not everyone on a horse had a cowboy or jockey hat, and so forth), but overall, it was one of those 'a thing you did' kind of social requirements.

We in the US always credit/blame JFK for the change, but internationally indoor jobs and the invention of sunscreen probably also helped.

Quote from: chirine ba kal;1037929I am, to be frank, not holding my breath. They are all about 'control' and 'prestige', and they've done a great job of strangling Tekumel.

Sorry. Been playing catch up.

They haven't. We're here. Might not be "sanctioned", but I've followed the advice and made it mine.
