This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;1030460You got to stay in hotels?  I seem to remember a camper at least once, and thank God I didn't go camping for GenCon...

After that Origins fiasco, and the Gen Con camp-out that nearly killed me - pneumonia - we always stayed in hotels. still don't like 'em, but there you are.

Quote from: ffilz;1030438I'd love to see more pictures that show how your table is used in different ways. These days I'm unlikely to ever do anything so fancy, but it's still interesting.

Short answer: There are photos of the game table and room in action on my Photobucket page and some videos on my YouTube channel. Links in my signature.

Long answer: I have sets of tiles for Water, Arid, Temperate; each set has between 32 and 36 tiles, and since the table uses 25 at a time in a 5x5 array it's actually hard to get the same terrain twice. I also have sets of vegetation  for Arid, Dry, Temperate, Dense Forest, Conifer Forest, and Mangrove Swamp. Add in the building sets for Dense Urban, Light Urban, Rural Village, Tribal Village, Pe Choi Village (domes), Temple Complexes, Ordinary Ruins, and Mysterious Ruins, and I can duplicate just about any of the terrains we've ever encountered in our careers. The Underworld Tiles are cut MDF strips with paper overlays for different types of chambers and corridors, with all the usual accessories of traps, portcullises, doors, and such that one might need to furnish one's lair. Generally, I set things up as per the needs of the game campaign, as game sessions usually fall pretty neatly onto weekends. I also have other terrain items, like the Glorious General's miserable mud-brick fort, but these usually get used in the larger table games (60" x 90", 60" x 120") that I do for 'outside' events. Anyway, links to things below...

Loved your set-up, too! :)

OK, I think my Tekumel campaign may have lost all but a single player today. That makes it a solo campaign, which might be rescheduled and continue, but it would need some negotiations, which are in progress:)!

It wasn't Tekumel's fault, per se. The players just disliked the plane-hopping part of the campaign, much to my surprise, despite it being built in since before the characters came to Tekumel. And they'd just met a representative of a rebel faction of Lords of Humanspace, who actually wanted to prevent Tekumel from returning to it and use it as a base:D!
The point was, of course, to get them to either confront or ally with The Goddess of Pale Bone;).

In the end, I might have to switch settings, or groups. Settings seem easier in this case:D!
Either way, Tekumel taught me quite a bit, and I'm going to carry those over anyway;).

Lord Asen,

Sounds like fun. Their loss. I guess some don't like the sword & planet vibe...too old fashioned maybe? At least you had fun. I would love to get into a similar game in my neck of the woods. However, Tekumel seems to have too few and far between opportunities.

My take on Tekumel includes Humanspace. The players may not see it, but the two are intertwined.

To counter AsenRG's bad news I just checked and 5/6 spots in my Tekumel game at UK Games Expo in June have sold so there is interest in playing in Tekumel here at least.

No, I think it's just that my players want to explore in detail one setting. Possibly one settlement of it, too. I think it's a phase, but I've been there, too. Possibly with similar results, though I think I just caused the GM to switch her plans.
Either way, I can't blame anyone:).
And the campaign isn't over. It's just got less PCs now, but I'm used to single player sessions;).

That's great!
Though it's not Tekumel that was the deal-breaker, but another element of the campaign. Hey, I might even get the time to describe what has happened so far!

Off to the 5e game session in a bit, with a fistful of new figures. We'll see if anybody shows up, seeing as how it's Palm Sunday... :)

Gronan of Simmerya

Hosanna to the Son of David!

And good gaming to everyone also.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

Back in after a day at the local FLGS; the game session started slowly, due to people arriving over time, but I had a truly wonderful afternoon talking to one of the regular game groups about miniatures, painting, and the history of RPGs. Could not have asked for a better day out, really! :)

Photos to come, after I unpack...

Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;1031191Very glad to hear it.

Thank you! It was wonderful to have a day of just plain gaming, with big dollops of just plain fun. The vintage Sandy Garrity figures that I pulled out of the bins to make a squad of the Blackmoor City Watch went over well, as did the various personality figures. The "Adventurers' Encampment" set also gave some laughs, especially when we got jumped in the middle of the knight and had to fight our way out of our bedrolls.

All in all, it was - I thought, anyway - the kind of great gaming that I haven't had for quite a long while. Sold a lot of paint and brushes for the FLGS, too, which went over well.

The young lady who played the Sacred Cat Of Bast last year in my Free RPG Day 'Lord Meren' game wants to play the same PC again, and I am horrified to see that she wants an Egyptian Mau as the 25mm cat's paint job.

Time to die like a man, I think, and use the really powerful OptiVisor as well as my Pendon Museum superpowers...

Big Andy

In the What's On Your Shelf article, there is a photo (last one in the middle group of six) that has what looks like library card catalogs (next to the 'A' series of boxes). Is this the NPC index cards? Yours and the Profs? And since there is talk of maps in Gronan's "soggy lumps" can you give us a rough map of the basement?

An 'Eye' question- Is there a size limit on what a ruby eye can freeze? If you shot a big ol' aklo with one would it be moved out of phase or is it just too damn big? If you can freeze something that big, does it have to be center mass or can you just pop it on a tentacle or toe?

Does the Hokun have a navy or their own weird clear glass boats? Can they hitch rides with the Hluss?

That is how I realized I needed glasses. No matter how much or how good my light was I couldn't focus my eyes on minis to paint details, lol. Glasses and a swing arm magnifier have done wonders!

I hope this helps. The house is 30' x 30', with north at the top of the map; the stairs come down into the middle of the basement. The northeast corner is the laundry (Sink, Washer, Dryer, shelves) with a toilet in the middle of the east wall. Southeast is my workshop, with eorkbench and shelves. The center of the basement has the furnace enclosure.

The game space occupies the entire west side of the basement. The northwest corner is the game room proper, with the table against the east wall. S1 and S2 are the scenery shelves, with the terrain tiles out in the game shed in their tubs; M1, M2, M3 are the miniatures shelves proper, with something like 5,500 to 6,000 miniatures - I need to do a current inventory! - in their sorting bins. T1 and T2 are the Tekumel paper archives, under the game table; G1 are the game accessories in drawers. The books live on their shelves, and the 42" plasma screen is in the corner. Five chairs in the room, with another ten stored on the chair cart.

The southwest corner is the game lounge, where players can nosh on the buffet and schmooze. Shelves on the west and south wall for artifacts and LARP stuff; A/V rack in the southeast corner. Costumes on mannequins in this area, along with Lord Chirine's traveling chests and other baggage. 52" plasma screen for movie nights.

The drawers you mentioned are IKEA ones for the game accessories - pens, pencils, laser pointers, etc. - and have been moved from M3 to G1; not all the photos were taken at the same time. My copy of Phil's index cards is in my office, upstairs; I made sure that Phil's set went to the Foundation. All of our digital archives are in the office as well; only about 20% of our holdings in our archives are on display at any one time, due to space issues.

Six human-sized beings, as per EPT, was the way Phil played this. It has to be no more then this in mass, so really big critters were right out. It also had to be the entire being, too, so no 'partial' effects.

Not that we know about; they extrude their clear chitin, like the Pe Choi and Hlyss do, so it would not surprise me that they do have clear boats. There's been speculation that the great black ships of the northern seas are theirs, made by their human allies, but nobody wants to go and find out.

They live on the far side of the planet, and don't interact with the Hlyss; at least that was the way it was in Phil's campaign. The two DO NOT get along at all, as we saw once in an underworld encounter where - for once - we were the innocent bystanders.
