This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Most gamers don't go to RPG cons. I've been playing for 35 years and never been to one (though I do go to the local boardgaming convention). None of the 15 or so friends I've played D&D with over the years have been to one either. My sense is it's mostly people who live in particular regions of North America where there is a high concentration of cons, or who have made geek stuff their main thing and spending $600 to go to a con is part of their lifestyle.

I am fortunate to live a 15 minute drive from the biggest hobby gaming store in the world. And they carry all of the DCC adventures. But the last time I checked, they were out of the weird dice. Not really that surprising - they're about as niche specialty products as you get.

In my experience, it's really hard to find DCC dice in Canada. I have no idea why. I think a lot of gaming stores tend to not give enough emphasis to the OSR (partly because a lot of OSR games aren't connected to the main rpg-book distributors), but you'd think 'weird dice' would sell well just as a novelty.

Anyways, as someone already mentioned, the Crawler's Companion app is free, and awesome.

The Sentry Box carries everything. The DCC RPG, all the adventures, the Perils of the Purple Planet boxed set, even Metamorphosis Alpha. And back before I was interested in buying the DCC, I saw the dice that Goodman Games sell themselves. With the markup and exchange, they were probably $35. But they don't carry the dice anymore. Again, it's an incredibly niche item.

Sentry Box focuses more on card and board games now. Most players of RPGs play either 5e or Pathfinder.

They stock virtually every RPG book published in the english language. How many other brick and mortar game stores in the world do you think have Metamorphosis Alpha, Peril on the Purple Planet, or Barbarians of Lemuria sitting on the shelves?

Where they sit and sit. Yes you can get those RPGs there, but they're not exactly flying off the shelves. Don't believe me? Next time you check out the OSR books, run your finger across them. When I go there, I see people playing card games and board games upstairs. RPG players are practically nonexistent and the last time I saw people playing an edition older than 3rd in that building, was in the mid 90s shortly after they moved there.

I'm not sure what your point is. That RPGs other than Pathfinder and 5E are a tiny niche market? You won't get any argument from me there. But I see no reason to believe other cities are any different from Calgary in that regard. Do you think if you walked into a game store in Atlanta or Ottawa you'd be likely to see a group sitting at a table playing Barbarians of Lemuria? If anything, the availability of niche and out-of-print games at the Sentry Box makes it easier to play old-school RPGs in Calgary. That doesn't mean you would expect to see those people playing in the Sentry Box. People who play RPGs in stores are usually under 26 and living with their parents. OSR gamers tend to be older, and older people usually have homes to play in.

If it makes you feel better, the last thing I bought there was the DCC RPG. :D

Nice. Now that I know there's competition for DCC books on the shelves at the Sentry Box, I'll have to grab the stuff I want when I see it.

I plan on going when the weather gets nicer. I don't like that C-Train station which has already become famous for stabbings and prefer to walk over from Downtown, which has the added benefit of letting me stop for Shawarma. I always check out the OSR stuff first.

What you might want to do is buy the minimum, basic "DCC Purple" set, then if you want more of the funky ones, wait until another Kickstarter comes along. I used the various trick methods of using regular dice, then got all of my DCC dice through Kickstarter.

The last time I was in the Sentry Box was 2015, and back then they didn't have the dice.

Again, I think that's so strange, because like, for decades the D30 was all but useless, and  yet every store sold them, and TONS of gamers I knew owned them, just to say they had them. Gamers love weird dice. I could imagine lots of people who never play DCC buying them.

I could see picking up a d7 because of the frequent times that I have 7 players, and want to randomly pick one.  When you are doing that in a hurry, that 8 on the d8 comes up at just the wrong moment.  Though usually I set that as, "the person I would have picked to have bad thing happening to him," before I decided to give the players a random chance to spread out the misery. Come to think of it, maybe my players should look into getting me a set of DCC dice.

I don't much care for the d3, d5 or d7 myself. But I like the D16 and D24 a lot!

I'd buy all of them if I saw them. I collect dice. I even have cheater dice I bought almost 30 years ago which are still in the package because they are there for show. You know, those funky dice could be handy if someone were to revise and OSRify Alternity.
