This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So does anyone know a place in Canada to get the fucking dumb dice you need to play DCC? The cheapest I can find them for is $35. And sorry, I don't care how cool the game is, if I have to spend $35 on dice (and more realistically $70 if I don't want to be passing dice around the table all night), you've just created a significant barrier to entry for play. For no good reason I can think of besides capricious whimsy.

You don't need the zocchi dice to play DCC. I just got my first set when I backed MCC and I've been playing DCC for years. If it is that expensive don't spend the money and get some at a local con from a retailer there.

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

I have a few sets of those Koplow 'Who Knew?' dice and they're fine... much cheaper than the fugly 'official' dice Goodman promotes.

Is there some special deal with Canada because down here in the States I've seen DCC-compatible sets at stores, cons, and online for way less than $35?

Sincere question, not trolling.

Agreed. You have a couple of options.

(1) Use a regular poly set. For example, a d7 is simply a d8 where you re-roll 8's. No need to buy lots of extra dice if you don't want to.

(2) Use plusses instead of moving on the dice chain. Simply think about the average number and use that to determine the plusses. d3=2, d4=2.5, d5=3, d6=3.5, d7=4, d8=4.5, d10=5.5, d12=6.5, d14=7.5, d16=8.5, d20=10.5, d24=12.5, and so on. So a shift from a d5 to a d7, for example, could simply be a +1. Shift from d8 to d14 becomes a +3. And so on.

Basically, I'd say look at the DCC rules and see if you like them. If you do, don't let the funky dice get in your way. I've run plenty of demo games at my local store by simply using regular poly dice just because that's what the players happen to have.

If you are not against tech at the table get the Crawler's Companion for Free on Google store. It has a dice roller with all the dice plus look up of all the core rules.

It will spit out spell results and crits/fumbles faster than you can look them up.

Most of the times you need to move up the dice chain due to advanced level it equates to a +4.

$25 for the full set through Amazon associated seller, +$10 shipping. Haven't seen the dice at local stores.

Yeah, I think I'll get the book and use the online tool for rolling. Then if I like the game, I'll get the dice.

Not long ago I bought a copy of Dungeon Crawl (the pyro wizard cover), and I bought additional dice (3d,5d,7d,14d,16d,24d,30d, though I only didn't have the 14, 16 & 24) of the same color of D&D type dice I already own.  They are the Impact! Miniatures dice.  That way the additional dice was just like buying another set of dice, not expensive.  Also, talking about it with a friend that also got the book for the campaign, we noted that the big book is actually very reasonably priced, which offsets the dice.

I find the dice chain to be one the stand out features of the game, setting it apart from most of this type, and I wouldn't want to harm that part of it.

Ha! Spend money for a Con in order to buy dice. Tragedy.

Agreed, but my point was that there are other ways to play without having all of the special dice; removing the dice chain and replacing it with dice modifiers is one possible option. Personally, when I play DCC RPG I like to do it BTB.

Or just grab a set at the next gaming convention you're going to be at because it can be cheaper and you're already there. Some of us aren't such social rejects that we cannot go outside

Of you want something between the expensive Zocchi dice and cheap Koplow ones, I really like the Impact dice for DCC.

That will give you the intended average result, but it will change the odds of each value and leave out the extreme ends. e.g. d8+3is 4-11, not 1-14.

I'd probably use a die-roller program or web page, e.g. https://rollthedice.online/en/dice/1d14 or http://www.kreativekorp.com/dX/?roll=d14
