Title: Image posting guidelines.
Post by: Nexus on January 18, 2018, 11:47:47 AM
Quote. This is an RPG site. It's not a pr0n site. It's certainly not an online vomitorium. If an image could get someone fired if they look at it from work, don't post it. Provide a link and clearly mark it as NWS (Not Work Safe). Likewise, if the image is upsetting or disturbing mark it as NMS (Not Mind Safe). When in doubt, presume everyone else works in a monastery and has a very weak stomach.

Basically, a Trigger warning? So no posting of violence (there has been), insects, blood, spiders, physically unattractive (there has been, usually for being Fat which I think Doom complained about someone being called or that alleged picture of Pundit), etc. with out warning?

But racist and insulting things (like the aforementioned "Kneel Before you God!") are okay? There was no Moderation action, no one had their account status changed If someone posted an image of black people supposedly kneeling in supplication and cowed by anyone but particularly Trump there'd be an issue even if it was supposedly a 'joke' or if I did it and I AM black. But people are supposed to just know what "common sense" would deem ooky. So if I posted some pictures of Jewish caricatures or Kill Whitey posters from the 70s, that would be cool?

As I said before, since the image in question was presented publicly in several venues and, to the best of my knowledge no one was fired or disciplined for viewing it in public or at work and it was on topic for the discussion in question claiming that posting it violated some vauge "common sense" guideline seems thin unless you're expected to be a mind reader.

Maybe a requirement that all images must behind spoiler blocks with a warning /description would be more fair. Then no one can claim they were offended without warning since they'd have to make the conscious choice to view the image.

It is a common sense rule. If you see an image you think crosses the line stated in the quoted section, report it (that is usually how these things come to our attention).

When you're dealing with hundreds of people with diverse opinions, personalities and ideals "common sense" is neither. I did report the Kneel Befor your King" image. Nothing happened because my common sense, different from the Mods common sense. As far as I'm concerned the dead child image didn't cross any lines at all, but apparently it Triggered Pundit or whoever reported, I guess?) so clearly "common sense" isn't working when it can be biased by personal issues like politics and peronal animosity and bad tempers. And the arbitrary punishment can be handed out (like have your account status changed without warning. Yes, technically not a ban but it was supposed to limit the target's ability to do what other posters not so changed could do. To me that's a punishment).

Its not that different from OBS's report function which is driven by "common sense" and could resort in arbitrary punishment. And most of this site complained mightily about that (at least when it touched games they like).

Another might be images must be approved by staff before posted publicly.

The guideline is:

Don't post pictures of dead toddlers and pretend that these are representative of 1.5 million young adult single men of fit and fighting age a significant percentage of which were trained as jihadis.
