This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Understanding Roleplaying Games

Quote from: Catelf;623471Ok, now when that is over and done, i actually would like to see where you are going with this, especially since you have added that D&D isn't really an rpg ....

I assume you're aware that a lot do not share that view ...
I mean, i consider to D&D to be (utter) rubbish in several ways, but i still count it as an rpg ....

You have heard of the Barbourofelidae and Nimravidae  At one time both were considered cats. Then we learned better, and learned that Barbourofelidae and Nimradivae were missing elements found in Felidae. Just as games you can roleplay in are missing elements found in games designed for roleplaying.

My point is, just because you can doesn't not mean it was written so you could. You can wax a child's slide with waxed paper to go faster. Doesn't mean the slide was made for you to wax.

Quote from: mythusmage;623469"Let's pretend aint proper role playing."

I did not say "proper". That's a wholly different argument.

Quote from: mythusmage;623469Bull shit. Plain, ordinary, everyday bull shit.

General convention dictates that the word has reached an idiomatic state of "bullshit".

Quote from: mythusmage;623469You want RPGs to be something important, something special.

Do I? Not based on what I said, certainly. You don't read very well.

Quote from: mythusmage;623469If it's only "let's pretend" how can it be something special? Who the fuck says it has to be special?

Certainly, I didn't say anything like that.
You're just making things up as you go along.

Quote from: mythusmage;623469You, boy have an exaggerated sense of your own importance. All an RPG needs to be is entertaining, and that's it.

I agree with you that all RPGs need to be is entertaining and that's it.

But if you're going to argue about what constitutes roleplaying and a roleplaying game, then you need to be clear and have a well structured argument.

I have attacked your argument, not RPGs, and not you. (Until I said you don't read very well, that was certainly more of an attack on you.)

Quote from: mythusmage;623469As for how I compose my essays. I don't give a shit what some persnickity little troll says how it's supposed to start off, I compose it my way, and if you don't like it, who the fuck's forcing you to read it? I swear, some of you are fussier than a cat with an anal probe.

Are you looking for false praise instead?

You are a poor writer. You presented a poor argument.

Quote from: mythusmage;623469And BTW, you want to convince somebody to do it another way, stop bitching at him.

I am not expecting to convince you of anything.

I apologise for being needlessly condescending in my original post. I edited it afterwards, but not before you saw and responded to it.

Rather than cursing and swearing all about, how about you restructure your argument given all the criticism you've received, and then we can continue discussing the issue rather than attacking each other?
