Title: Wuxia Space Opera Character - Emissary of Jianghu
Post by: Ghost Whistler on January 01, 2013, 08:10:16 AM
Trained in the subtle arts of Joss – the Chi Arts of trade and wealth – an Emissary is a powerful servant and representative of the inscrutable outlaw court known as the Jianghu. Specifically an Emissary is one tasked with representing the interests of the Jianghu outside its territory; they are trained in a variety of skills including combat, even assassination.

The Jianghu recruits a lot of its people from other sources: Alchemical Heroes may serve in the retinues of high ranking Mandarins (perhaps as family bodyguards); while a Wutech Shaman may tend Jianghu datadumps (while also reporting back on Jianghu activity to the Hsien on Wudanica) and E-houses (places of great civility and propriety where information is traded).

Ok, this is the penultimate character type for my game (there will be 5, fittingly I think). But I'm not sure how to go with this. I don't really want it to be some kind of weird 'magic' thing where Joss is some silly power.
The Jianghu is a frontier guild type organisation that has its own codes of honour. Part Triad and part Robin Hood. They aren't evil, but they need an edge. I'm not sure how to buff this with a scifi edge. The first idea was that Joss allowed people to bind promises like geases, but again where does that come from?
