This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

S.A.G.: Superhero Angst Game.

So I made up a superhero thing. It's kind of inspired by certain directors and editors takes and mandates that superheroes should all basically have shitty lives full of drama where they continually fail to succeed at anything that might make them happy. Examples: Nolan Batman, or the new DC rules about marriage, or basically everyone in the Marvel Universe.

There are two stats: Super, and Suck.

Super is rated from +1 to +5. You may take it as high or as low as you wish. For each +1, you may list a superpower the character possesses, ideally something that can actually be phrased with the word 'super' in it. Examples: Super Strength, Super Healing, Super Hair.

Suck is rated at -1 to -5. It is equal to the inverse of the character's Super, the more Super, the more Suck must be in their lives.  For each -1, they must list some flaw or unshakable source of misery in their lives. Examples: Alcoholism, Romantic Non-ability, PTSD.

Whenever a character must make an action, they roll a D10. If it's a 6+, they succeed.  If one of their superpowers can be applied to the action, they may add the +X from Super to the roll. Whenever a character attempts an action that might be related to one of their flaws, or to resist indulging in a flaw, they subtract Suck from the roll.

In addition, during every session there is also the Editor Fiat. This is one specific type of action that the GM has arbitrarily decided 'doesn't work in comics', and therefore any action that might dispute that is penalized by Suck. This can include things like marriage, successful relationships, familial happiness, or even just being the wrong sort of person, be it for reasons of race/gender/religion/etc. The DM is not required to notify the players of the Editor Fiat prior to the session: ask a comics writer sometime.

Combat is as follows: if you punch someone and succeed in your roll, they are knocked out unless they have Super, in which case they can try a roll of their own to resist the damage. If you think of an attack that relates to one of your superpowers, or a defense against an attack that does, then describe how, and add Super to the roll.

Suck also has an effect on combat: if the success of an action would result in an event countermanded by one of the character's flaws, Suck penalty applies to the roll. So a character with Romantic Failure will roll at penalty to save their girlfriend from the villain.

Characters do not change in comics, therefore, Super and Suck values do not change, however, Editor Fiat can optionally be used to change one player character's superpower to something else, and a significant failure on a roll involving Suck or a flaw may result in that flaw being replaced by something else: Romantic Failure in the previous example could be replaced by Grief because the girlfriend in question was murdered.

I prefer Gnomurdered 1e, it's simpler.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

That reminds me, Supersuckers!

I'm not sure about they system (saving SO usually means letting bad guy go, so on the one hand, fail to catch the bad guy, but on the other, be a big damn hero), but that's the best set of attributes ever.

Super and Suck both seem to be quadratic in that either gives you both a number of flaws/merits, and the power of each. So +1/-1 guy has one power that's +1 [1x1], while +5 guy has 5 powers that are +5 [25].
It works but you could extend it by separating the number of powers from the bonus. So someone could have one power at +5 and one suck at -5, instead of five of each.

You could also add 'suck 0' characters with no superpowers.

If you wanted do a less tongue-in-cheek version, you could call the attributes " Power" and "Responsibility".

Actually, that's pretty similar to what I've done in my Phaserip home brew. Power determines the general potential of the character to perform superhuman feats, with a scale of 1- Nancy Drew to 10- Galactus; while Responsibility is a 1-10 abstract summation of a character's personal responsibilities, mundane obligations, burdens and/or addictions. The two ratings interact with the Karma point system to determine the size of a character's karma bonuses.

The Sentry should be the poster child for 'Super and Suck'

This system looks very similar to 3:16: Carnage Amongst the Stars by Box Ninja/Gregor Hutton. Check it out! Flashbacks; Strengths & Weaknesses would work extremely well with the concepts behind this game. And instead of "Hatred for home" it could be "Hatred for Humanity". Instead of Fighting Ability/Non-fighting Ability, it's Super/Suck...
