This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

One Horse Town

The closer that Stone Horizons gets to completion, the more i find myself wondering what i'm going to do next.

At the moment i have no idea. It seems as though all my creative juices have been eaten up by SH. I'm not sure that i can follow it up with anything, and if i can, what that something will be.

Any ideas?

Something historical maybe. There aren't nearly enough games set between around 1500 and 1970. Or something fantastical, but with renaissance-era or later technology.
Read my blog, Monsters and Manuals, for campaign ideas, opinionated ranting, and collected game-related miscellania.

Buy Yoon-Suin, a campaign toolbox for fantasy games, giving you the equipment necessary to run a sandbox campaign in your own Yoon-Suin - a region of high adventure shrouded in ancient mysteries, opium smoke, great luxury and opulent cruelty.

Yeah, no one does stuff like that! How about a game of intrigue, espionage and magic set in Elizabethan England? :O

Nah! No one would pay any attention to it!

How about Stuart England? Between the Charleses, Jameses, and Cromwell, you'd have an awesome background, and I've never seen a game using that setting. With magic, of course! Otherwise who would buy it besides doddering old curmudgeons like me?

Danger

Take a break.  Recharge.  Buy those porno movies you've had your eye on for a while now.  Drink heavily.  Fall down and spill those porno movies out of your bag in front of a horrified group of school children.  Slur your words as you try to angrily pick up those movies only to spread them further out and around as your inebriated senses can't just get together on this.  Get pelted by laughter by those kids make fun of the "drunk, dirty old man," as they aim kicks to your movies, knocking them further from your feeble, uncoordinated grasp.  Reel drunkenly as you stand to bawl out those little bastards from kicking any more of your collection of "Tranny Bangers vol. 4-10," and "White Whore Amateurs," into the street and under the nearby parked cars.  Get the cops called on you as you grab one by the collar and start choking him/her.  Go to jail where you then have to contemplate calling friends/family for bail while battling a hangover and trying to think of a way to explain your way out of this.

You know; the usual stuff you do after a big project.
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

Hard-ish SF, set on an ice planet whose inhabitants are going through an Islamic Reformation.

That's an awesome idea! I wonder why it hasn't been done before. :D

What do you want to publish from me next, Mr. Bowley?

Something that capitalizes on your obvious strengths - high concept, brilliant create-your-own-setting tools, and understated, but elegant and evocative, writing. Hmmmmm....

How about a non-steampunk late 19th century-ish setting? Something where life is cheap but a good cigar isn't? Something less urban than SH, but not rural... Non-historical, just the feel - H. Rider Haggard plus Dickens plus Kipling maybe? You could pull it off.

Flashman?

Yes! That too! That's the feel I would love to see you go for. I would roll Flashman right into that big Ball o' Influences.

I'm seeing boys' own adventures, kipling, the man who would be king, flashman, Sir Richard Burton's African adventures, derring-do, cads, stiff upper-lips, courtesans, exotic foreign beauties, cricket, rugby, afternoon tea, theatre & travelling carnivals, pea-soupers, berry-berry, dropsy, spear-chucking, canoes, peelers, zulus, darjeeling, the kyber pass, the new world, the Pinkertons, plantations, work-houses, gentlemans clubs, upper class twits, working class heroes, Oliver Twist.

The most important is, of course, cricket. :)

The humble cricket bat is long overdue for a proper statting up in an rpg if you ask me :)

Of course! Anything else just wouldn't be... well... you know!

But yes! Those are exactly the images in my mind. Not all the world is known, and there are strange things in the odd corner.

According to Casey Jones in TMNT "Cricket ain't a sport!" though it proved most effective in pacifying the Foot Clan IIRC.

I have no idea why anyone would think that a game that lasts for 5 days and has breaks for lunch and tea is not a sport!

I will not countenance it, i tell you! I demand satisfaction! (hey, i'm getting into character already)

Ooh, i forgot the noble art of pugilism too.

In true OHT style, i work backwards...I start with a title and a rough idea and work from there, usually in the form of random tables that express my thoughts - which i then flesh out.

How about For King and Country! as a working title?
