This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

You can also come up with something that is not only original and creative and artistic, but also maybe even decent, or moral if I can use words like that, or something that\'s like basically good -Lester Bangs

Hmm, sorry, not as impressed. Needs some included background - Right now they're just wandering monsters.
The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

Whoop, double-post, sorry.

QuoteDo you just make up the names, or is there a list somewhere?

While I use Tablesmith for the raw output, I've completely ditched all of the default tables that come with it and built my own from scratch. The names tables particularly took a lot of fiddling to get them to churn out Gygaxian-sounding names without the typical fantasy name bullshit.

Narf...I thought you put me on ignore after I aired my opinions about the LDS. Anyways, FYI, these ARE random/wandering monsters. These groups were generated strictly according to the 1e AD&D Monster Manual guidelines which can be a real chore to work through manually (1 in every 30 orcs is a 2HD Leader for example). Personally, I prefer a very freeform sandbox campaign world with no story-arc or 'balanced encounters'; similar in many ways to the Judges Guild Wilderlands setting. To do this kind of thing right, it demands lots and lots of pregenerated encounters that will generally only be developed in-play, if at all.

Oh, I've got you on mental ignore for LDS issues, but I don't hold resentment very long. It's just too much work.

In this case, you got my honest opinion, independant of the name attached to the post.

I wonder why the groups are so big - it doesn't seem like they'd be useable against normal-sized parties.

They're so big because of the Monster Manual guidelines - Dwarves clock in at 40d10 for example. The idea seemed to be to allow the DM to create tribes, lairs & settlements rather than just single encounters. Personally, I scale the numbers down depending on the situation. 40d10 dwarves is a whole army or settlement. 4d10 dwarves is a mining crew. 1d10 dwarves a militia patrol. 1d4 dwarves a small adventuring party. The place where these numbers come in handy is when deciding how many upper-level characters to include in a group and how to scale treasure according to the encounter. A 'Type A' treasure is a massive hoard of coins, gems, jewelry and magic items. Presumably, a mining crew (roughly 1/10 of a full tribe) would possess around 1/10 of that treasure.

OTOH, if a party did decide to take on one of these groups, it would be more than enough challenge to build a whole adventure around. Sure, goblins only have 1-1 HD. But there are 400 of the little fuckers.
