This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Testing the Water] Cliche Flash Cards!

I've had a system neutral idea and I thought I'd test the water to see how it sounds.

Gaming Cliche Flash Cards!

Ilustrated Flash Cards with gaming Cliches on them to pick up and wave at your players and GMs when things get silly.

Examples may include...

"Kill them and take their stuff"

"Python Free Zone"

"A Wizard did it"

"Save it for your fanfic"

"Bare your skin for +1 armour"

"Welcome to the misery tour"

"GM is stumped- expect Orcs"

"Science doesn't work that way"

"Facepalm"

"Double facepalm"

"Insufficent hands for appropriate facepalm"

Thoughts? Any suggestions for others?

Just a bit of fun really but I'll probably provide a booklet of silly system applications.

Well, honestly, without knowing what they would add to a game I don't see the point?

But, since you asked for suggestions, let me light-heartedly tender:

"Oh, it's an Ian game...WHORES AGAIN."

Ian Warner

hehe. Got to start writing other archetypes or I'll get Frank Miller like reputation!

"What? Orks AGAIN?"

"Didn't we save THIS princess in the last game?"

"If this is Tuesday then it must be.. ahh shit, I forgot."

"Head... Desk... Thump!"

"Ghouls... Why did it always have to be Ghouls?"

"Wait, what is French anyway? A 'dead ancient language'?"

"Oh, not THAT 'little friend'!"

"Adventuring AGAIN? I promised the missus I'd clean the stable out."

"Damm, I knew it was left at the THIRD tree. Now we're lost. Who names a forest 'Mirkwood' anyway?"

"A Dragon, who ordered the damm Dragon?"

Adapt

Even without specific rules for implementing these within a particular system, I can see these as being a fun tool for quick inspiration during a game or when preparing an adventure. If they are done well, you can probably get away with just that and still have a handy little product.

Since gaming cliches are often genre-dependent, have you considered breaking up the decks into "fantasy", "sci-fi", "horror", etc.?
Running: A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying
Playing: Nothing at the moment.
Working On: Iron and Chaos (Pulpy swords and sorcery setting using modified/optional OSR rules), 20 Warriors for Hire (Twenty down on their luck warriors for OSR games who are looking for work as hirelings, henchmen, mercenaries, or meat shields)

That may be an idea.

Perhaps a generic deck then expansions later :)
