Swords & Sorcery house rules for S&W/OD&D (and BD&D, 1e, etc.)

In case anyone here is interested, here is a link to a summary of all of my house rules for Swords & Wizardry (the 0e D&D retro-clone): http://akraticwizardry.blogspot.com/2009/07/swords-sorcery-house-rules-index.html
(Links to all of the specific house rules listed are included.)

The house rules are intended, when used together, to simulate more closely the 'swords and sorcery' genre, as exemplified in the fiction of Robert E. Howard and Fritz Leiber.

Most of the house rules can also be used on their own (or in conjunction with some/all of the others) in a 'standard' or 'classic' 'Old School' D&D game (including Original D&D, Basic D&D, RC D&D, Labyrinth Lord, 1e AD&D, OSRIC, etc.).

I've mentioned some of these house rules in a previous thread here.  Many of the house rules have been, or will be, published in Knockspell and Fight On!.

Enjoy!  :)

I have been running some S&W white box, with no house rules at all, but your suggestions are good ones, I think.

I have reservations about the critical hits and fumbles. It's not that they're terrible rules, but maybe simply unnecessary.

The background professions are similar to a house rule I implemented for a game that shares some traits with D&D. Actually, the +4 bonus to related checks is even the same.

The weapon damage table is simple and elegant. I like it!

Don't like Thief classes much, in my "OD&D", but yours looks just fine.

Backstab is pretty brutal. I wonder if it could be left at simply a bonus to hit?

Spellcasting is harsh, but perhaps suitably so. The spell categories look okay, on the face of it. This will certainly cut down the amount of magic flying around, in particular the flashier varieties.

And the XP changes make sense.

Very nice.

[edit] Just to clarify: the damage for criticals seems too high, and the fumble rules "don't feel right", but that is all. [/edit]

Thanks for your kind words, paris80.  :)

The critical hits and backstab rules are probably too harsh if you're using the White Box rules, as characters and monsters typically have fewer hit points in that version than they do in the 'core' rules.

Nice to see that someone is playing them. My next edit of S&W Whitebox should be posted on Mythmere Games webpage soon. (I hope)
