This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Looking for thoughts on my Fantasy Game

I made a game called Raven of the Scythe.

This is a fantasy role playing game I put up on drivethru just under a year ago.  Based on feedback, playtesting, and just overall tweaking with the rules, I have just made public, the most intensive update/revision/patch to the game since it first went up. I would love to know what you guys think of it.

It is available for download here or in my signature.

I also have a youtube channel that I started to talk about the game on.

Thank you very much in advance.

You can support the Raven of the Scythe Kickstarter and help me get my game edited proffessionally and maybe even get some really cool art done for it

Throw an image of a character sheet and a monster stat block up.  Give people something to talk about.

Ok, I can do that.

I wanted this game to be a sort of rules medium game.  As in I wanted the characters to feel very different from one another but no to bog it down in rules, minor modifiers, or abilities that seldom get used or are quickly forgotten about all together.

But I also wanted there to be enough options and playstyles avlible that players feel like they have a lot of tactical options and control about how the character develops.  I play with a lot of people new to RPGs and everyone has been new to this game.  Longest time it took anyone to create a character I've seen is maybe 45 minutes, and that was for a spell caster.

Monsters come in a lot of variety. I pulled from mythology and also tried to add enough of my own creations that the game had an identity of its own.

First off, I'm a really, really rules light kind of GM/Player.  That said, I was actually interested to read the character sheets.  I like their layout and the art you picked for their portraits.  Based on the bit you've shown I think I get the kind of thing each element might be used for during a play session.  I think that the attributes are just their modifiers.  I rarely would consider reading a random filled out character sheet, but I actually liked those enough to read them.

I think the game looks like it would work quite well.  I don't like skill systems or special additional feat type things, but for those who just want a small amount of that sort of thing rather than a character sheet covered in them, this looks like a good option.

Thank you very much.  I think I can speak to a couple of your points and explain my position on them.

My favorite game for years was Alternity.  Still think very highly of it.  New CoC might have taken the top spot for favorite game with me however.

Issue with alternity was character creation took a year and a day.  The game introduced a ton of concepts right off the bat and really needed a lot of buy in at the start.  That's a lot to expect from people who may be new to the hobby.  Also, as much as I loved the game I was more than willing to admit that its level of crunch got in the way sometimes.

Many years later I was happy to start a game of Dragon Age.  Having grown up on AD&D I was happy to get back into classic fantasy (i left D&D at 3.5).  Had a great time with DA, but as the players leveled up their characters, the game made them pick a lot of special little abilities here and there.  Some times the players didn't want the abilities, they just had to take something at that level, even if it didn't fit the character.  Also, there were so many mods that they would simply forget about them.

I didn't like that.  I wanted you to be able to make a character in about half an hour with very little help.  Even new people.

I didn't want you to ever feel bogged down.  Every single ability you get, is there because you picked it and wanted it enough to pay the xp cost for it.  Also, if you dont like favors, dont buy them.  Invest in skills or attributes, and still be a very valuable member of the group.

That was my goal anyway.  YMMV.
