This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: gonster;397299I just skimmed through the entire document before reading and all I can say is -- HOLY CRAP!  That's what I call an rpg in one tome.  It's going to take a little while for me to absord all this information.

One little thing:  What's Star20?  It's mentioned in a bunch of examples, but it isn't given in the initial options for play.

Ah! Thank you! I'll have to re-do those examples! Star20 is another drop-in resolution mechanic - there are several more - for free download on the site:

Star20 - A bell curve roll-over d6 mechanic
StarPool - a d20 dice pool roll-under mechanic
StarZero -

Sign me up FM, been rereading SC2 again lately in an effort to satisfy my sci-fi craving, and would love to give your latest brain-child a look :)

Great -- I was looking for StarPool (I read about it in a review of Blood Games II).  It's the one I'm going to use in play.

StarPool and StarPerc are my group's favorite mechanics, though they've begun to take a shine to StarRisk lately too. :D

In StarPool, when you take a penalty on a die roll, 1 die is the minimum you can roll.

If you have more dice to get rid of due to the modifier, do you just stop with "You've only got one die in the pool." or do you ad/subtract 3 for each  die that's still needs to be accounted for.

Example: you are about to fire a gun at an oncoming guard.  You are hindered.  You have a rank of one -- you noramlly roll 2 dice against your COOR.  You subtract one die from you dice pool.  Do you just roll your remaining die or do you subtract 3 from your COOR to account for the second die "owed" because of the hindered state?

It's not clear in the rules.

Hi Gonster!

You just roll one die. It's a hard limit. If you as GM want to put a ruling in for reducing the Attribute, that's cool, but that's not in the rules.

I think I really like what I've read so far. Haven't delved into seeing how any mechanics have changed, but I like the more humanocentric (is that a word? eh, who cares ;) ) the book is, with very cool options for aliens if one wants to include them. In a change from previous SC, I'd be interested in running the Cluster with just hints of the Seeders and then the Etvar as alien antagonists/rivals, with the majority of conflicts cultural rather than racial. Seems like SC3 is right up my alley FM.

Hi Sigmund!

Awesome! One of the ideas I have been toying with is similar to this, but with the Etvar having uplifted most/all of the other aliens when they controlled the Cluster. The fall of their civilization freed the other aliens, and made room for the Human refugees, but the Etvar have built themselves back up in the meantime. :D

As far as the mechanics go, the StarPerc mechanics are basically the old SC 2 mechanics, with provision for Traits and Edges. The others are very different, so I don't know if you will like them. I find my tastes in mechanics are very wide, with my main dislikes being metagamey stuff and huge dice pools. Other than that, I like any well crafted mechanic. The choice of mechanic will very much affect play, so choose carefully! Luckily, it's a snap to switch to something else. :D

Ooo, that's a great idea... for me the idea of having a couple "servitor races" might work well... maybe one that's broken free, whith one or two still under the thumb, maybe with underground cells of freedom fighters. Could go hand-in-hand with why the Etvar dislike humans, if humans have helped the freedom fighters. I really liked that theme in Babylon 5 with the Centauri and Narn, it could totally work.

Well then the best mechanic you've made is to make it "a snap to switch to something else" :) Variety is the Spice of life.

Yeah! I'm thinking part of the reason the Etvar civilization fell was the rebellion of the servitor races when the shockwave went through, disrupting Jump travel through the wormholes for a long time.

Hehe! Cool then! That's the whole reason behind that 'mechanic'! :D

Completely plausible and a great mechanism for creating conflict, love it :)
