This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Sanity Points

I'm working on a game and was thinking of having a Sanity Point system.

I could assign penalties based on horrific events and cybernetic implantation and so on and on. You get the idea.

Past a certain threshold you get Acute Stress Symptoms. Past a little more and they become permanent.

Is this a stupid idea and offensive to people with real PTSD or is this an interesting element? If it sucks, how does it suck compared to CoC?

I like sanity points/corruption/paradox/wisdom but be aware I am a MtAw girl. :)

I'm not sure what I'm looking for with them. I'm reading the d20 PRD and they just seem, kind of stupid. Back in the days of Old World of Darkness, I think we all really liked Humanity and Paradox (not the same things certainly). Corruption in L5R (I guess that's what you are talking about?) made great sense when we were playing it.

A part of me really wants some PTSD rules, but I'm inhibited because I'm afraid that if they aren't spot on, they will seem very, very stupid.

Have you looked at Kult or DCC or UA or Neliphliem? They handle sanity in different ways that work nicely.  Or even Deadlands or Whispering Vault.

Thanks for the name drops. The only one of those I played was dead lands, and it not much. I'll see what I can dig up when I hit the FLGS tomorrow.

The Traveller

Well worth taking a look at the sanity mechanic in Unknown Armies too, its the gold standard as far as I'm concerned.

"What else are you meant to do with dark and dangerous powers?"

beeber

always a fan of the mechanic, however you do it.  my only exposure is CoC's SAN and WFRP 1e's insanity points, though

Already mentioned it for him.
