This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Paper miniatures? Anybody use 'em?

I guess I put this to both game designers and and players. Does anybody here use those print and play paper miniatures in their games? I'm thinking of the 30mm ones you buy at drivethru rpg.com like these pirates or something.

There are a lot of fantasy and sci-fi figures out there, but not many Post apocalyptic ones, and as a PA publisher, we're thinking of doing a few sets and just looking for opinions on them.

I use paper minis occasionally and have built up quite a collection - mostly because there's so much decent free stuff out there.

Check out onemonk.com, they have some free-to-download compilations which contain post-apoc stuff (MUTANT COW!) amongst the fantasy.

I absolutely love paper minis, when I have a working printer (and I just bought one). I started with Savage Worlds figure flats, but I'm not afraid to use any paper minis that are pretty much in the same scale with what I'm using and look good.

I do, when I have ink for my printer (currently out.) Normally, though I love to use the little things when they're needed over plastic/whatever minis because most of them are cheap, I can color them (most of the ones I get come with black and white outlines.)

My favorites are S.John Ross "Sparks." Since they're a font, I can use in an art program to make them easy to color.

I've used them in the past, yeah.

Somewhere I've got a CD loaded with Sparks - these are miniatures that are done up as a font, so you can make them different sizes/colors/whichever.

Very interesting. We will certainly provide an ink only and colored version.

It would be great to have other objects and obstacles included in a paper minis set, like barrels of toxic sludge, fire, mutation area effects, crates, maybe even some vegetation or rubble stand ups.

When I was a kid, long ago, we used to buy something called 'poke out books', or that's what we called them. They were books with perforated paper models sets, such as towns or farms, castles or trains. Each set had houses, trees, vehicles and people. Loved those!

Might try doing some "gray scale" ink outlines, so I can print them on Shrinky Dink paper once colored and have hard ones for the PCs!

(I'm probably the only person who'd use the Shrinky Dink paper, so really ignore me.)

I use paper minis when I'm running something that's not Euro fantasy (since I have a huge D&D mini collection, and not much else besides 40K stuff) - in particular, most recently I was looking for MF minis.  ;)  (I actually settled on some that came with a Fallout pen-and-paper game, since I'm doing MF with a Fallout flavor.)

I like paper minis but not without bases.

The Litko ones are pretty nice, but at $1 each that adds up. Anyone know if anything similar, but lower priced?

I've always preferred to use cardboard counters -usually half or 3/4" ones. We started off using the ones from Battlesystem, but soon started drawing and cutting our own for characters, as well as monsters that weren't included in the set.

They're much handier and more convenient to use, don't chip or break if you drop them, and they are easily replaced.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

I use appropriately-sized squares of foamcore.  Just slice'em down the middle (being careful not to go all the way through the back) and slide the paper mini on in.

Here's an article on methods that get a little more involved than this:

Washers from home depot.  $1.00 for ten.  Or pennies.  $1.00 for 100.
