This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

PM me the email address you want me to send it to. Warning: It is a large file (24.2 MB).

Done. Look in your PMs. It may be best to use a photobucket account - that's what I use for big files.

I'm playing with the Cunning Folk now (Cunning Man, Cunning Woman) who are practitioners of Folk Magic in Britain of the period. What I see as I examine the subject are the following: Creating anti-magic charms, creating love charms, fortune telling, curing diseases and healing, finding Witches (evil spellcasters of any type), finding lost items.

What I am seeing is a pattern. All of these can be accomplished in game with applied psychology, some suggestion, and a bit of herbalism. Blood Games has the concepts - and mechanics - of Tests of Faith and of Will, which allow characters to throw off possession, prevent domination, and conquer fear. If we allow the Cunning Man to manipulate these Tests, we don't actually need Magic. Need healing? Herbalism and a Test of Faith might heal you as well as a doctor. Love charms? A boost to your Test of Will gives you more confidence, making you more attractive. Anti-Magic charms? Holding or wearing a charm would get you a Test of Faith to resist magic. Finding witches or lost items? A bit of Suggestion might prod memories and allow the person to remember just where an item was lost, or to associate curses with evil folk who might have cast them. This would be way cool!

I think I'm going to run with this concept. It would also explain why surviving Cunning Man spells don't work now - they are all devices to heighten suggestion and build faith in the recipient.

Comments? Like it? Not like it?

That looks interesting, especially as I've once again uncovered my 7th Sea books - and put them away after seeing what has troubled me about the game back then.
I think we've spoken about the basic concept a while ago by PM (although I neither remember if we've diverged from the topic of Wild Blue or from the topic of Blood Games back then - I only remember that we've strayed faaar from the original topic).

I'd probably go with a more pulp-y and action-friendly system then StarCluster, but if the inclusion of the defining bits turns out similar to Blood Games, it should be too difficult to just plug those into another system.

I like especially how the Cunning Folk exploit the ToW/F roll. That has been one of my favourite mechanical bits in Blood Games (just like the general handling of sanity/fear).

We were talking about Blood Games. I have been wanting to do something like this for a long time with Blood Games, but like many ideas, it's been on the back burner of my brain for a while. Now it's in full swing.

It's going to be similar to Blood Games. In fact, it *is* Blood Games as adapted for Renaissance England.

Thanks, Stefan! I playtested the Minstrel yesterday with my group, and the players loved it. I'll be posting about that a bit later. :D

Thanks, LV! :D

Here's the Minstrel:

Minstrels

Minstrels are musicians, great musicians, who can use their mastery over music to work their peculiar arts. Minstrels create music to get the intended recipients of their magic into a receptive state, whereupon they can weave subtle Words of Power into their songs to influence the minds and bodies of their audience.

The Minstrel must sing and perform a great and powerful song to perform magic. The Minstrel must perform a masterwork, with at least five successes in the performance, to place the audience in the proper state of mind. Those hearing may attempt to resist the song, with a penalty of one per success to the TN of the attempt. The song will affect anyone within the hearing of the song, who  can understand the Words. Those who successfully resist the song will know that the Minstrel has attempted something mighty, but will be unchanged.

Boost

On a successful Boost check, and the burning of one point of MAG, the Minstrel can weave in Words of Power which can boost - or drop - the hearer’s attributes. Depending on the Words inserted into the song, the Minstrel can raise or lower the STR, COOR, AGY, END, CHAR, and/or INT of those hearing the song by one point per success. If more than one attribute is signified in the words, the effect is spread evenly over the attributes affected until they cannot be evenly spread any more, with the GM apportioning any remaining points according to the emphasis of the Words. The effects of Boost last for 1 hour per success.

Emotion

On a successful Emotion check, and the burning of one point of MAG, the Minstrel can weave in Words of power which can influence the listeners’ mood. Those affected will take on the emotion specified in the song, with the depth of emotion depending on the number of successes achieved. The effects of the Emotion last for 15 minutes per success.

Memory

On a successful Memory check, and the burning of one point of MAG, the Minstrel can weave in Words of Power which can change the memory of those affected, according to the words of the song. The imagination of those affected will be so powerfully enhanced that they will drink in the words of power , replacing their true memories - or false memories instilled by another Minstrel - with the words the Minstrel performs. The Minstrel gets one Word of power per success. The effects of Memory are permanent.

Free

On a successful Free check, and the burning of one point of MAG, the Minstrel can weave in Words of Power which can suspend or destroy completely any spell or magical effect currently operating on the area or upon those affected. The Minstrel must make more successes on his roll than were made in the casting of the spell in order to destroy the spell. Otherwise, the spell is supended for 15 minutes per success.

On Words of Power

The player playing the Minstrel should come up with one rhymed verse of at least two lines, showing the Words of Power used. The quality of the effort is not a factor, though the lines should rhyme and scan fairly well. We are not all great lyricists!

I like the feel of the Minstrel, and the possibility for subtle. play.  Bards are huge in my setting, so this is near and dear.

Yeah - I liked the idea, but was wondering how to fit it into the history properly. This works nicely. Bards were long gone, Troubadors had faded away in the last century, but Minstrels were still around. It works, and I like the result!

Clash has been actually the quicker one on this point - Wicca already works in a similar way in Blood Games.

Speaking of which, will witches play a role? The early modern era has been the heyday for torch&pitchfork combo sales, after all.

Wicca is a synthetic 20th century religion, and thus not applicable to gaming in the 15-1600s. I've removed the Witch, Cambion, and Vodoun priest from available Paths for On Her Majesty's Arcane Service. Witches because they are modern, Cambions because they are created by Witches, and Vodoun  Priests because they would only be found in Africa and the Caribbean at this time - where they would be called Obeah Men and be somewhat different from Vodoun priests anyway.

Hunters in Blood Games can be created by either Witches or Magi, but in OHMAS Hunters can only be created by Magi. So the available Paths in OHMAS are Hunter, Magus, Templar, Esotericist, Savant, Warlock, Cunning Folk, and Minstrel. Available Character Options are Half-Angel, Immortal, Fairy Changeling, and Human Changeling. In both cases, new Paths and Options are in italic.

Witches in OHMAS are any evil spellcaster, usually but not exclusively Warlocks, and secondarily Esotericists/Wizards, and even occasionally Cunning Folk and Savants. There was no differentiation made by the people as to type of magic performed. Accusations of Witchcraft are the main reason most who can perform magic prefer to hide their powers.
