I started playing old WoD with some boys (mostly people I didn't know) last monday. VtM, actually. Not my favourite game, but I wanted to expand my group a little for a while. The game went pretty well, sort of slow by moments (primarily because most of the players were sort of rusty), but generally alright.
By the end of the night, the GM (I'm not calling anyone "Storyteller". That's too bloody long and silly) asked us how had we liked the session, and when two of the boys made these "Hmmm..." noises, he said, "well, did you have fun at least? That's the important thing."
And then it happened.
One of them said it. He said, "For me it's not about having fun. It's about playing the character right".
I mean, I always thought that sort of rubbish was something that only people who didn't actually game believed.
-Moreso, he was playing a Tremere pre-teen, so I don't really know if "playing the character right" (which he didn't do, because he hardly spoke at all, even when he had actually written an extensive background) couldn't translate as "playing something I can jerk-off to later". He certainly stroke me as that sort of bloke. But that's not relevant to the issue at hand.-
Well, kudos, story-people, I'm forced now to recognise that there really are some people out there trying to game like that. Fuck.

Wow. What a stupid answer.
Hi SunBoy!
Ghaa! If he had said something to the effect of "To me, playing the character well is part of the fun, and I just couldn't get into it, which sort of soured things for me" that's a story-oriented gamer anyone can happily play with - personal goals (playing the character right) that tie into the group's (having fun) goals. If I judge by his actual answer, though, he's a swine.

Hey, clash. Bullseye, as usual. Playing the character right, the way you imagined it, should be part of the fun, but actually HAVING fun should be the primary goal.
I've got to say something:
I played again with the guy in question yesterday, and while he isn't Mr. Roleplayer, he actually played the game and seemed to enjoy himself. I think now that he isn't just a "no-funner", he just got very poorly educated in what RPGs really are. Which is a bloody game, BTW.
Oh, and I'm not so sure about the wanking part anymore.
Hell, seeing him actually playing and having fun really made my night.

Good news, SB! Sounds like he's salvagable after all! :D
