This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Age of Fable

I've started a collection of random tables for fantasy.

Let me know what you think:

These are great - Well done for all your effort. One of the most useful resources I'm come across for kickstarting the brain when fleshing out settings.

The adventure ideas generator is excellent for non-straightforward scenarios with weird tangents - it's totally Cubist - for example:

BEGINNING THE ADVENTURE
A tribe tricks the heroes into recovering a lost item from a mysterious island.

GOAL
Someone who is able to defend themselves when pressed and is soft-spoken.
Someone who is a great merchant and caravaneer, disregards political borders, and admires the generous.
The anniversary of the fall of a mighty tower.

OBSTACLES
The gigantic corpse of an overthrown god.
The unscrupulous landlady of a roadside wayhouse.
A ruthless bully of an under-officer with high ambitions.

DETAILS
Someone who loves the wilderness, will eat only fruits, vegetables and grains, and admires brave and upright warriors.
An abandoned building, used by secret lovers.
Someone who is haughty and arrogant, forsook all material comfort as an ascetic, and secluded themselves to pursue mastery of a craft.

PLOT TWIST
The heroes take shelter in a place which turns out to be the source of their danger.

No worries! I should be updating it fairly regularly for the next little while at least.

Thanks!

I've just had a bad thought: that having so many plot elements might encourage railroading ie GMs come up with an elaborate single plot line and don't want to 'waste' it by having the players go the 'wrong' way.

("and THEN you meet a ruthless bully of an under-officer, who is celebrating the anniversary of the fall of a mighty tower, and HE tells you about the gigantic corpse of an overthrown god...")

I was thinking of it more like the different elements would be things you *might* encounter ("if the players stay at the inn, the landlady might try to trick them. But if they stay the night in the open, they might meet the patrol...")

Feedback?

Yep, that's how I intend to run it. If the players only encounter a fraction of the options it'll still be cool.

someone on rpg.net said a similar thing. I was kind of surprised - I haven't tried to turn any of them into an adventure because I'm only playing not GM'ing but they seem to me to be more or less typically fantasy-ish. Not so?

Cool - good to see it's being actually used in play and not just talked about on the net :haw: (especially because I spend a lot of time talking about role-playing on the net)

Engine

Quote from: Age of FableI've started a collection of random tables for fantasy.
There's something similar to this created by someone else at another rpg site I frequent, and people have had tons of fun trying to shoehorn all its insane possibilities into actual adventures, but I haven't had half as much fun with it as I did with this adventure generator. Sample kick-ass premise:

Quote from: Adventure Ideas GeneratorBEGINNING THE ADVENTURE
The goblin king hires the heroes to banish a powerful spirit which haunts a mysterious island.

GOAL
A shambling horror, falsely accused and without a single defender

OBSTACLES
A skeleton, dressed in fine robes and turned into a puppet, which priests operate on sacred occassions.

DETAILS
A lurid sculpture.
Someone who becomes berserk with battle-rage, loves to sing and make music, and admires the generous.
A helm in antique style, sound despite its tarnish.

ASSISTANCE AND REWARDS
A ship in a bottle, with a note saying only to smash the bottle in direst need.
Now, keeping in mind I run a realistic-as-possible, internally-consistent-as-possible game, jumping through the kind of hoops you need to in order to make a game like this work is really fucking difficult. Trying to do all this and make it look perfectly natural and transparent to the characters would be a challenge. A fun challenge.

We should have a thread where people take these -- hmm, I've just actually read this thread and realized I'm covering some old ground -- and try to write out the framework of an adventure for it. I may try to do that with this one. Great stuff.
When you\'re a bankrupt ideology pursuing a bankrupt strategy, the only move you\'ve got is the dick one.

Age of Fable

Maybe there's an island, and anyone who lands there dies. The shambling horror is supposed to be responsible, but really it's innocent - the actual culprit is the demon who lives in the skeleton-puppet.

Really? It took me a while to find Cat Coloring- the Most Important chart.
I wish it wasn't white writing on black background.
I wish some of the charts were numbered differently (d% for instance)
but those aside these are Awesome. I give it a B+
