Title: Needs comments on what route to take with my core Rules[Streed]
Post by: Catelf on September 15, 2012, 07:13:43 AM
Ok, here are the current Core Rules for those who haven't seen them yet:
http://catelf.webs.com/streedrpgcorerules.htm

Since i have gotten not much advice or suggestions for something i need for the most natural game that could be derived from it, i will now list a couple of possible games that i have considered to make with the Core Rules as a base:

* Ferals:
This is a kind of "Furry Anthros in an Alternate Modern Reality with Cyberpunk-tendencies(corporate espionage, ownership of Anthros .. ) ".
* Sentai Dolls:
Mixes Magical Girl, Tokusatsu(Think Power Rangers if you don't know what it is), and Masked Heroes in general. ... Oh, there is no Mega-Giant Robots or monsters, though, and the power-levels are at most like X-Men or lower ... for Player characters ... normally.
* Eerie:
Think kind of like CoC ... but it is clearly not, since "The Great Cthulhu" do not exist .... but some thinks he exist ...
Information about myth may be tainted ... or to be more precise, incorrect and disturbing.
However, if Gruesome Gods exist, they occasionally works against eachothers, and there is also Good Gods.
Oh, and the Anthros are often good guys.
* Gothire:
Introduces the Deadites, which may still be human, ... or not.
From extreme-anorectic? Skeltas, the possibly decaying Zombie-like ones, and Wannabe Vamps, to "The real Deal" ....
Magic is most common in this.
* Alleyways:
Mages owns Anthros, more or less, and the plots circles mainly around alleyways, cellars, dungeouns, rooftops and subterrean caves.
Gladiator-fights may occur, if not frequently.
May easily be adapted for a fantasy-like setting.
* Animakin:
Drives the "Ferals" idea further into the "Animal hybrids" and "Masked Heroes" idea.

..... Now ... any .. Comments?

With the way your core rules stand, the corporate espionage and or spy style game would work.  It seems to lend itself to this, with its storyteller style base.  With very little rewrite, you could easily do a wrap story showing the types, how they came to be, and why they are used in general.  I would however suggest you keep the first installment to only a few styles of "Furry".  Think about the TMNT: and other strangeness game by palladium.  So many animals to choose, all different powers, large roll times, and rewrites of your characters every few minutes.  Not to say it wasn't good, but for a first game... way too much to take on.  Unless you want to release it in three more years (that is, if you do nothing but write and playtest this for those three years).

This would be my other suggestion based on what I read before.  I would tread lightly on the superhero style game, as most players look at Heroes Unlimited and Champions as cannon.  Also, there would have to be a section for powers, or a write up for suits/items that give power (as in the power ranger).  You could always let the players work with the GM to make their own powers, and just have them grow.  Rules would be heavy in that case.  That would lend it to an idea like the show "heroes".

Just some thoughts, hope this helps.

At last, some response to this one!
Thank you very much, rway218 :)
I had actually given up on getting any response to it at all.

Ok, to your suggestions:
I used to like both TMNT & os, and Heroes Unlimited, until i actually tried playing any game based on them ....
So the genres are indeed dear to me.

However, i'd more compare TMNT & os to the last (but not least) idea on the list, namely Animakin.
Ferals are supposed to be limited to the Traits in the core rules, which i'd say equals Felines(all variants), Dogs, Wolves, Foxes, Ferrets, and some similar.
You do seem to suggest that i limit it further to "trait packages" of the said animal types above, for instance, to make them even more manageble.
Am i right? (I have considered that idea too, by the way.)

Now, Sentai Dolls you potetially pinned with comparing it to Heroes, even though Heroes did have several that broke the mould, and essentially got too powerful ... and the following "power creep" ...
However, Sentai Dolls are far more Power Ranger and Magical Girl, and thus more into Fighting and strategy, than mere brandishing of powers ... even though they may do a lot of that, too. ;)

This also sets the game apart from Heroes Unlimited, Champions, and Aberrant.
However, i think this game might benefit even more from limiting the powers to .... like, a mere fraction of what is available in Heroes Unlimited, for instance, only including the ones that suits the style and the potential power levels.
This would also result in the rules being less heavy.
.... And that would be needed, considering there would be a more developed combat section too (probably inspired by Streetfighter II - the storytelling game ... , but not as extensive).

You are very welcome!  I have some posts on here that have no responses, but I understand they are for games some may not play, or I didn't do a good job on asking for help.  I just love to help when I can.

I like that concept.  Keeping the rules and the character generation light enough so potential players don't get overwhelmed.  That doesn't mean it will be too simple either.  A good balance like in street fighter with the feel of Heroes would be challenging but rewarding.  I think you're on the right path.
