Title: My New Project....
Post by: GMSkarka on May 07, 2007, 05:13:44 PM
I'm starting work on a new game, and I've posted about it, with a question, over on my journal:

http://gmskarka.livejournal.com/286949.html

The question is this:  Should I produce a dedicated design journal, or simply add the design entries to my regular journal, tagged as appropriate?

Same journal, if you have to juggle projects or hit a creative blank spot for a bit you still have content, not people discussing if the game has tanked because you haven't updated for a week while you were on holiday.

I know that sounds cynical, but I can so easily imagine you say having to take a break for a fortnight while doing another gig or leaving an idea to brew for a bit before coming back to it and then getting internet rumours which were completely unfounded.

I would say put it in the same journal.  Makes it easier for people to keep track of it without having to juggle multiple links in their bookmarks and remember to check back.

Just my two cents.

You could always just post on your regular blog, and then repost all game-related posts to a big thread on this very forum!

Post it at the same journal, I don't want to have to read two of your blogs when I can just read the one that I do now.

No, like Steampunk Musha, only in Dodge City!

Post in same journal. You can always remove them later.

First design journal entry is up.

I've created a tag, so you can go specifically to the design entries, rather than just reading my general journal stuff:

You can get an RSS feed of the design journal entries here:

This is a great idea Gareth. I love when publishers mix genre to create something new and interesting. Good luck with this one.:)

Hi Gareth: first of all, very interesting.

Second, however, I've received a few complaints from people who feel that you just posting the links here to your blog entries amounts to self-advertising without actually doing anything in this site. I'm not totally convinced by that argument myself, but I do think it would be easier for the membership here (and help to silence those complaints) if instead of just posting the links here on this thread, you were to actually cut-and-paste the entries you were linking to.  Feel free to continue providing the actual link itself if you want to, either on your sig or in the post itself.

Doing this might even be good for you; in my own experience what I've found is that a lot of people won't bother to click a link, but if you actually have the text on the thread they will read it and reply. So if what you're looking for is actual feedback, this might be a way to end up doubling it.

But they will, apparently, complain about it.

...I wish I could say that I was surprised by this, but, sadly, I'm not.  At all.

Put me down as a person who isn't complaining.  It lets me know when there is an update on the games development.  Then I go read it.  If I have anything important to say about the game I will probably post it here and I'm  pretty sure GMS would answer it.

Yes, well, I don't particularly think its a very big deal, I don't believe you're just posting here for purely mercenary purposes to advertise.  I do think it would be nicer for this site if you were to actually copy/paste your relevant blog entries on here, and I can tell you from personal experience that you'll be getting more people to read it that way. And seeing as how its only basically two clicks more work than what you've already been doing, and will help silence the critics and probably get a few more people reading, I hope it wouldn't be too much trouble for you to do it?

I'd like to add my support for Pundit's approach. I don't have any problem with you posting your links, but I'm alot more likely to read your content if it's cross-posted here.

Can't remember where, but I once read the results of a survey about online habits. The more you have to click to get some information, the less people will do that, or so went one paragraph.

In any case, keep us informed! :)

No, I didn't.

I just haven't posted any updates to this thread, because there were complaints.

There were also a people expressing interest, you know. Its not like there wasn't anyone who wanted to be informed about this... but in the end, the choice is yours, I guess.

I was trying to be polite.     There were complaints, you felt the need to bring them to my attention, you run the site, so I was honoring that.

Yeah, but note that I wasn't telling you to "cease and desist"; i was asking you if you wouldn't mind copying and pasting.  Frankly, if you feel so very strongly about it, I'd be happier if you kept notifying people of when your new updates are up and linking to your site, if you really don't want to copy/paste.  Though honestly I don't see why you would have such a big problem with the latter, as I know from personal experience it WOULD mean more people reading it.

Anyways, you're free to do any of the three: stop posting all together, copy and paste, or just post links/notices of your updates. Personally the middle one is what I'd recommend, but that's all it was, a request/recommendation.  Its not an issue where I'd oblige you in any way, and clearly you have people who are interested here in being informed of what you're up to, so please don't stop on account of those others who've complained, you'd be doing your "fans" a disservice.

I'm not trying to be a dick -- my main reason for not wanting to copy-and-paste is primarily because I'd like to keep comments as much in one place as I can -- both for my own laziness (not having to track down where people have asked questions), but mostly in the hope that a single gathering point for commentary will spark discussion with others.

That said, here's the latest entry:

Looked over the design journal - nifty stuff.  Very nifty stuff.

Being LiveJournal with no anonymous posting (and not wanting / needing an LJ account of my own), I figured I'd say so here.

And, being a big fan of the SotC engine, I'm really looking forward to seeing this out, GMS.  Really.
