Title: Looking for playtest/feedback - RPG Lite System - 'ODDS'
Post by: Jontheman on December 12, 2017, 07:06:20 AM
Hi all - I've created a simple RPG system that I'm giving away for free to get some feedback on it, and I've released a couple of adventures for it.

It's called 'To The Stars, Stellar Cadets!', and just for playtest purposes I've based it on the pulp science fiction adventure serials from the 1930s through to the 1950s. I found some free images on the internet and decided to have a go at designing a game that incorporated those images, as well as use it to test out my single die ODDS System.

The whole thing is available here:

If you have any feedback on the system then feel free.

I will look into it, but can't guarantee any playtest, for that, obviously, we would need more people.

That's no problem, any feedback is welcome and I appreciate your time.

Its much lighter than I personally prefer, but if you wanted light, I think you're achieved the mission brief. Good as an introduction for new players.
The adventure where you use your own house design was interesting. If I could vote for extra content, I guess maybe a crew option that lets you play some sort of alien character. Or IDK if psionics would be in genre? If so you could add an extra stat/crew option for that.

Extra crew options for aliens and powers is a good idea - I might opt-rule them in if I do another adventure for it. Cheers, I appreciate that.

Elegant stuff. IME this level of rules is perfect for young kids and short duration games, maybe half a dozen sessions.  It's all in the play testing though.  Good stuff though, can see how it will work right out of the box.

Cheers - I'm looking into how I can use it for extended play but right now the limited number range is also limiting character progression, unless I introduce a detailed skill system so that players can increase them in increments, but I really don't want to do that as I don't want to add any more complexity to it.

Difficult one. Any sort of advancement would mean more rules.
One idea that might be interesting is how - Over The Edge does it - XP basically works as luck points and you spend it to say 'Oh my previous experiences taught me this' and get say a +1 (or a reroll). In that I think you spend it and its gone. Or it could become a separate stat so that characters might become be 1st rank, +1 to spend this adventure, 2nd rank you get +2 and so on. Having it a limited resource meaning it doesn't automatically break the task resolution system, however.

Another way to limit bonuses while still scaling is to make it a comparison-based system. Say, if you're 10th rank you get a +1 bonus on tasks that are 9th rank or less. So, the bonus is never more than +1 but you have theoretically unlimited scaling. Would mean inventing a different system of difficulties so that's more complicated.

Or a third option that keeps numbers in check is to have 'horizontal' rather than 'vertical' advancement - where characters pick up extra 'Edges' or 'Talents' that will sometimes give a bonus in specific circumstances. Potentially you could have just a few, and with only experienced characters picking them up, as opposed to everyone having to use detailed skills.

Given that I love the old Buster Crabbe serials and others from the era, I will check out that link as soon as I have time. If the game seems workable, I will try to see if I can get at least a session of it and let you know how it went.
