This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I need generic terms.

Thanks!

Assuming this is in combat, "Martial" or maybe "Fighting". If it's for something beyond combat, I'd have to know how the system is supposed to work to come up with an appropriate term.

Skill? Determination? It's hard to say without more of a concept of what you're modeling.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Active conflict in the game comes in three forms: opponents, obstacles, and dilemmas.

Opponents are NPC or other player conflicts and interactions.

Obstacles may take a physical form, or may involve mental skills, such as puzzles.

Dilemmas arise from the choices players have to make.

Along those lines, yes. Ghostbusters, for example, had Moves, Muscle, Brains, Cool.

Simplicity, vgunn. A rose by any other name and all that. So long as it's not obscure or stupid it doesn't matter much.

Agreed. Just coming up with these names is driving me crazy. It should be easy to do.

I truly insist Sensibility and Excelsior are rather winning.

Wondering if you might have some suggestions on what to call:

The ability to overcome a human/monster opponent =  Best / Subdue / Prevail

The ability to overcome an obstacle =  Subvert / Exceed / Conquer

The ability to overcome a dilemma using common sense or logic = Prowess / Slyness / Intellect

Hope this helps...

The problem I have with the first two is the same words usually apply to both. Still that doesn't mean you couldn't just decide one is the first and the second is the other and in use it would become evident. It just locks up my brain.

Sometimes one roll is better than two (or three).

Maybe an Overcome roll?
