This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[GNS] Why are you doing it wrong ? ? ?

Yodelfucks is breaking my brain.  Other than GNS, what do all of these mean?

Yes, I know that I am going to regret asking.

None of them mean anything interesting.

SIS is Shared Imaginary Space, a fancy term for "what we imagine in the game session".

Drift is when you start by trying to focus on one of G/N/S and end up going somewhere else. This is considered a "bad thing" since according to Uncle Ronny, if you don't stick to just one, or if you mix two or three of them, then the game is "incoherent", by which he means it is no fun.

And so on. None of them are at all interesting or useful, and indeed most of them are bollocks. As jargon they fulfil the same function as a dog pissing on a tree - marking territory. "Here lie the lands of Uncle Ronny, everyone else fuck off."

You should read GNS: A Socratic Dialogue. Towards the end it gets less funny and more convoluted, but that's because as I delved into the depths of Uncle Ronny's philosophy, I went a little mad.

I'm all better now.

Though I still don't know what "yodelfucks" means.

Nah, this has gotta be Fritzs. That rudimentary grasp of English. Czech. Shellshocked reasoning skills of a baboon rushing the trenches. Czech. Erratically seismic typing style that reveals the masturbation behind the man. Czech. An almost childlike inability to understand either side of an argument. Czech.

And Fritzs, no. I'm not talking about Dread. I'm talking about Jenga. What the fuck did you think I was talking about?

You can also come up with something that is not only original and creative and artistic, but also maybe even decent, or moral if I can use words like that, or something that\'s like basically good -Lester Bangs

Maybe he has a web page with his role playing game he wants to share.

If you read the above post, you owe me $20 for tutoring fees

On the bare, slim chance you are not either A) Doing a very bad GNS advertisement, B) A troll or C) Delusional;

GNS and all those other acronyms you posted are not the state of the art of game design. They're jargon used by a niche group of game designers; some of whom are relevant, some of whom are irrelevant and some of whom are pretentious. These groups are not exclusive, although generally relevancy and pretentiousness do not mix.

As they are 'niche' game designers, their jargon has little to do with the whole of gaming. It is habit among general (As opposed to niche - I'm referring to market share here) game designers and the RPGs they make to use plain english (Insert applicable other language for game designers who do not design in english) to describe things and, if an in-game term is needed, to use an existing, applicable english term. Even White Wolf, which seems to have a love of obscure words, does so.
The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

Yes, I know that I am going to regret asking.

Drift often used as when you go "off what the author was intending".  Which is to say "actually playing the game".

IIEE is Intent-Initiation-Execution-Effect.  That bit where you go "I wanna hit the orc", you say so, you roll dice, the orc takes damage.  It is useful as something to think about only if you want to build a weird game where you mess about with the order of those things.

The rest are theoretically useful if you're trying to articulate certain kinds of finicky point.  In practice, I don't find them useful terms, period.  Though some of the things they're meant to cover are interesting topics.

Then I'd like to make an unreasonable request of you, Levi. Please start a thread (or threads) on these topics because "yodelfucks" here isn't doing them justice.
"Meh."

I'll see if I can find an angle that is generally useful for some of 'em.  And I won't be using those terms - most of the time, in such discussion, the amount of semantic bother involved is much greater than the value of the point.  Unless, y'know, you like semantic botheration.

I kept reading about the GNS theory here and at RPG.net and had no clue about it, and it's attachment to the Indie movement.  I went to the Forge and scanned it.  Honestly, after reading a little bit, I said to myself, "this is intellectual masturbation."  It's really just word play.  I think that Kyle summed it up best when he said that Ron Edwards was piss marking his territory, and if you want to enter you have use this special terminology.

Interesting. :)  Honestly, I didn't think of it in those terms.  I not sure which I should be more concerned about, that my post was controversial or that you are keeping some kind of ledger.  :D

It may not stand out much here, but you and I both know there's places on the web where saying that will get you banned.
