A system for balancing spells without set costs.

It's an intriguing idea for sure. A usual criticism is that you can't compare costs between different groups and tables. A naval campaign would require diffferent traits than a desert campaign and so on.

There are already a few ways to handle this. One is to consider in advance what tasks will be given and choose costs accordingly. This has the problem that objectives might change or that people don't know what they are going to do in the first place. The other method is not binding traits to circumstances or reducing such connections as much as possible. A common criticism then is that everything seems same-y.

So both methods have their problems. Your idea might be an alternative. I do not see book keeping as a big problem, either. Making and erasing marks on your spell list seems like less book keeping than calculating spell points beyond a certain total or writing daily spell selections.

Do you have a name for this method or shall I cite it as Age-of-Fables cost?
