This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Steampunk Voyage: How would you do it?

I'm currently running a steampunk campaign using Savage Worlds. At the moment, the PCs are embroiled in a political plot to save a democracy-leaning monarch from his tyrannical son's ambitions. This wasn't really what I had in mind to begin with, though, and I think that with the players I have, a different campaign style will suit them better.

What I have in mind is an expeditionary voyage (on airships) across the ocean, something that's never been done before in the setting on this scale.

What would you do with this idea?

I would the clockwork Prussians spring a sudden sneak attack, crippling the expeditionary force, save one heavily armed Zeppelin, which then must lead a rag-tag fugitive fleet in search of a shining . . .

Um. That's just me, though.

That sounds like a great idea. What are you asking? The mechanics? I wouldn't be at all afraid to use the abstract dogfighting rules from the pulp toolkit. Airships, big and slow, are capitol vessels.

It's hard to stay interesting with your PCs spread out, so I would take a cue from Star Trek and make them the command crew of an airship, or from Prime Directive and make them the high-adventure SWAT team from an airship. Or maybe have them play multiple characters in the fleet. How many ships did you have in mind? How would you make a long ocean voyage interesting? That's your story.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

I'll come back to this after some sleep.

Well, maybe the tyrannical son wins and the King and his loyal subjects flee to a newly-established frontier colony.

Right I've totally forgot what I was going to say. Sorry. If I remember I'll come back to this.
