Because I sure don't.  I was approached yesterday by a rep from GALMADRIN Publishing House about licensing Compact Heroes to be translated into Polish.  I looked them up, and they have done this with other products (CoC, Ars Magica, etc).

Only I have no idea about what a typical agreement would be in the rpg industry.  I don't think it would be worth getting a lawyer because I wouldn't sell nearly as much product as I would need in order to offset the costs.  From what I could find from research, standard fees are 7% royalty from Gross sales, or 25% royalty after Operating costs.

Anyone have any experience in this?
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

My experience in licensing is a bit different - software, and art (2D and 3D licensing).

If you go for gross, make sure there's some language about street price, sales, etc. Also impact of returns and stock rotation no matter which way you go.

Given the size of the language market and likely street price, I wouldn't have high expectations for revenue.

Make it easy on yourself, get an upfront fee and a flat fee per unit sold.  Don't get into %, net sales and all that.  Also realize if you can't afford a lawyer all you are ever likely to see is the upfront fee.
