This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Done being Indie. Need a new term.

I'm tired of being "indie by default".  Indie has all these shades of meaning that have to do with an author taking total control of their stuff, as opposed to "some other hierarchy, or obligation set" having even a share of that control.

'Taking Control' is boring.  But, equally, giving control to a hierarchy of some sort smells bad to me.  I want to share with other gamers, and involve them, in the stuff I do.  I am not a rugged individualist among other rugged individualists, and do not want to be painted as if I was trying to be one or trying to posture as one.

Does "Mutual" sound good, or stupid?

How many times have I already told everyone to drop 'indie' already?

Answer:  A lot.  :)

How about 'Open Designer'?

How about just being Levi, game designer. Make your games, just games and carry on?

It has a nice sound...

But (to me!) it feels like it excludes people writing "living rulebooks", and those freely sharing stuff while retaining copyright.  Which I like less; I want to be able to welcome such people into being whatever it is that I'm calling myself.

Because I'm so connected to Indie people (many of whom I dearly love) that I feel like I need a thing to call myself just in self-defense.

That just makes me think Open Source, and as I've discussed before, there are almost no RPGs that have ever been created or licensed in a fashion consistent with the spirit of open source.

True, not entirely open source like software, but it is fairly accurate.  I posted links to Creative Commons on my forums so people would have a better idea of the different ways one can publish.

But open gaming is closer to open source than TSR was, or WotC is now.

Regardless, I'd prefer to keep my own clashes with purists like J Arcane down to individual disagreements.  I suspect such a moniker would look like I'm constantly peeing in the pool, rather than just having head-butting moments.

Funny, I haven't thought of you as particularly "indie" for a long time now, Levi. You went beyond those particular chains maybe before you realized you had. I was going to suggest "Game Designer" too. Considering you put your games into the public domain, you're more open than most "open" software designers, and no less so than the most open.

At core, you are a game designer. Everything else is just a tag to apply when needed.

At core, I'm a giant nerd.

But I digress.  I put this here, rather than in off-topic, because I do have to pay attention to the impression people just glacing at my webstuff get.  And I suspect that many of those people are coming in with the vague impression of "indie-ness".  Correcting that quickly, and trying to give an accurate impression, is a quasi-sorta-marketing thing.  And I think having a "thing I call myself' would help.

Or do you think I'm out to lunch on that?

I'm with Jong--I like "Game Designer".  I mean, that's what you do, and as for people scanning forums, hey, you're in a place where these small-press and indie dudes hang out, so you're clearly in the mix somewhere, right?

Er, but it's not all that central to where I'm going.  Yes, I write games, and use my stuff openly.  I also write articles on gaming and about ways to tinker with games - and for many people, that's where the value is at.  And I'm happy to host articles and files (including games) for others.

All those things, for me, are one giant seamless brick.  More or less an  "ideology", even.
