This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Derelict Delvers] Good SF/Space Opera quotes?

Anyone have a good list of quotes from SF/Space opera movies or books? Things that are very memorable?

I'd like some that could be used to label character special abilities. I've got a few already but better names I'd like to have for a few.

IMDB is going to be your best bet for movie quotes.  There are some online script archives, but finding scripts from old 50s scifi may be challenging.   I would post on their forums to ask about website recommendations.

With your retro themes, you are going to want nice chunky quotes from 50s sci-fi novels and short stories.  You will probably need to hunt specific fan forums to find a good resource.   Heck, if you can find a stack of 50s scifi novels, the back cover blurbs might be good enough to steal from!

I always like to put my local librarians to work for me.  If you get the right librarian (sniff out the geek!), they might be able to hunt down a Quotation book that would be great for you.  If it exists, it will probably be in the reference area.

Another idea.  Use your google-fu to find a university with a large sci-fi collection.   I remember hearing about UCLA developing one years ago, but I don't know if they got the donations.  Email the university librarian and find the dude in charge of that special collection.  Give me a special credit in the game book and put him to work for you!

Outsourcing baby!  Not just for giant soulless corporations anymore! :)

I've been reading a bunch of older SF--most of it comes from the 50-70's, its a great deal of fun, but its not as quotable as movies unfortunately. I am working on it.

However, I will give you credit regardless, you've been a great help!

(Send me your real name or version you want in the book via PM :D)

Yeah, IMDb is an excellent source for movie quotes.

Ronin

"I always get the shakes before a drop. I've had the injections, of course, and hypnotic preparation, and it stands to reason that I can't really be afraid. The ship's psychiatrist has checked my brain waves and asked me silly questions while I was asleep and he tells me that it isn't fear, it isn't anything important -- it's just like the trembling of an eager race horse in the starting gate. I couldn't say about that; I've never been a race horse. But the fact is: I'm scared silly, every time."

"There are no dangerous weapons; there are only dangerous men."

"There are a dozen different ways of delivering destruction in impersonal wholesale, via ships or missiles of one sort or another, catastrophes so widespread, so unselective that the war is over because that nation or planet has ceased to exist. What we do is entirely different. We make war as personal as a punch in the nose. We can be selective, applying precisely the required amount of pressure at the specified point at a designated time. We've never been told to go down and kill or capture all left-handed redheads in a particular area, but if they tell us to, we can. We will.
We are the boys who will go to a particular place, at H-hour, occupy a designated terrain, stand on it, dig the enemy out of their holes, force them then and there to surrender or die. We're the bloody infantry, the doughboy, the duckfoot, the foot soldier who goes where the enemy is and takes them on in person. We've been doing it, with changes in weapons but very litle change in our trade, at least since the time five thousand years ago when the foot sloggers of Sargon the Great forced the Sumerians to cry "Uncle!""

Spock: Doctor, I am well aware of human characteristics. I am frequently inundated by them, but I've trained myself to put up with practically anything.
Leonard McCoy: Spock, I don't know too much about these little tribbles yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered.
Spock: What's that, Doctor?
Leonard McCoy: I like them... better than I like you.
Spock: Doctor, they do indeed have one redeeming characteristic... they do not talk too much.
Star Trek (the original series, The Trouble with Tribbles)

Count Baltar: If a handful of survivors did indeed escape, they would have neither fuel nor food for a prolonged voyage.
Cylon Centurion: The information is not complete. It is offered in eschange for life.
Count Baltar: And what is the standing order, for humans, from your Imperious Leader?
Cylon Centurion: Extermination.
Count Baltar: Then carry out you orders. If they exist, they're doomed.
Battlestar Galactica (1978 theatrical film)

Sam Lowry: My name's Lowry. Sam Lowry. I've been told to report to Mr. Warrenn.
Porter - Information Retrieval: Thirtieth floor, sir. You're expected.
Sam Lowry: Um... don't you want to search me?
Porter - Information Retrieval: No sir.
Sam Lowry: Do you want to see my ID?
Porter - Information Retrieval: No need, sir.
Sam Lowry: But I could be anybody.
Porter - Information Retrieval: No you couldn't sir. This is Information Retrieval.

Sam Lowry: Better still, send it to Buttle, after all it's his cheque.
Kurtzmann: I've tried that. Look at this/ [shows Sam a file] You see? The population census has got him down as dormanted. The Central Collective Storehouse computer has got him down as deleted...
Sam Lowry: Hang on. [goes to computer terminal and begins typing]
Kurtzman: ...Information Retrieval has got him down as inoperative. And there's another one - Security has got him down as excised. Administration's got him down as completed...
Sam Lowry: He's dead.
Kurtzman: L... [pause] Dead? Well, that's awful!
[Kurtzman sits down and looks at refund cheque]
Kurtzman: [desperately] We'll never get rid of the damn thing now! What are we going to do Sam?

Well, maybe you are right. Maybe there's something wrong with the computer. I don't know, it's a strange life. Cybernetics, genetics, lasers and all those things. I guess I'll never understand any of that stuff. Guess maybe holograms are not supposed to.

Well, duty's duty. One can't consult one's own preference. I'm interested in truth, I like science. But truth's a menace, science is a public danger. As dangerous as it's been beneficent. It has given us the stablest equilibrium in history. China's was hopelessly insecure by comparison; even the primitive matriarchies weren't steadier than we are. Thanks, I repeat, to science. But we can't allow science to undo its own good work. That's why we so carefully limit the scope of its researches–that's why I almost got sent to an island. We don't allow it to deal with any but the most immediate problems of the moment. All other enquiries are most sedulously discouraged.

Aha!  I knew I'd find it!

Jack Williamson Science Fiction Library
http://www.enmu.edu/academics/library/collections/jwsf.shtml
The Jack Williamson Science Fiction Library at Eastern New Mexico University has one of the top science fiction collections in the world. It contains more than 30,000 volumes

The collection is located on the top floor of ENMU’s Golden Library. For more information, contact Gene Bundy at 575.562.2636 or e-mail Gene.Bundy@enmu.edu.

Here is a list of SciFi Library Collections
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction_libraries_and_museums

The most notable seems to be: Toronto Public Library with 68,000 items

They have a huge RPG section too!

I was thinking about movie quotes.  I wonder if it would be fun if the movies were really obscure, rather than the usual big ones.   I am thinking the Razzies winners

The rest of the information is good. But I'll stick to more positive and more quotable than "Word Dialogue" winners *LOL*

Anyway, thank you!

Outland

Such a smart piece of equipment, and a wreck like me trying to run it.

You know, you haven't your medical all-star here. Company doctors are like ship's doctors. Most are just one shuttle flight ahead of a malpractice suit.

Spacehunter : Adventures in the Forbidden Zone

You have a very enviable life force, a life force you're going to share with me.

Dark Star

I do not like the men on this spaceship. They are uncouth and fail to appreciate my better qualities. I have something of value to contribute to this mission if they would only recognize it. Today over lunch I tried to improve morale and build a sense of camaraderie among the men by holding a humorous, round-robin discussion of the early days of the mission. My overtures were brutally rejected. These men do not want a happy ship. They are deeply sick and try to compensate by making me feel miserable. Last week was my birthday. Nobody even said "happy birthday" to me. Someday this tape will be played and then they'll feel sorry.

Silent Running

On Earth, everywhere you go, the temperature is 75 degrees. Everything is the same; all the people are exactly the same. Now what kind of life is that?

It calls back a time when there were flowers all over the Earth... and there were valleys. And there were plains of tall green grass that you could lie down in - you could go to sleep in. And there were blue skies, and there was fresh air... and there were things growing all over the place, not just in some domed enclosures blasted some millions of miles out in to space.
