This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[OGL] How do you use it?

Quote from: Ian AbsentiaTo be frank, I was working on a Traveller-derived project of my own accord (MARINER) and began pursuing a license from Marc Miller to publish it.  At that point I was informed that there would be a means to obtain a license very shortly, and not long after that Mongoose made their announcement.  I would have preferred a license directly from Marc/Far Future Enterprises, even if I had to pay for it, but it looks like Mongoose is the company to talk to now.

So, I have a work that's derivative of classic Traveller, not Mongoose's Traveller.  Mongoose's Traveller, though, is also derived from classic Traveller (as well as Mega-Traveller and other subsequent works).  So, we have common roots, but I will have to accommodate their Open Game Content.

Make sense?

It is a bit more work but you should be able to take Mongoose's OGC and modify it back to the original rules set. You cannot use any of the text from the original rules set so you would need to reword it. This depends in part what Mongoose does for it Designation of OGC and PI. Some companies sabotage their OGC on purpose in order to limit reuse. I do not know Mongoose's track record.

Also, a side point, are you just interested in using their OGC or do you wish to offer OGC of your own?

This has been my intent from the outset, so no bump in the road there.

I'm only just beginning to consider the implications of this. MARINER has been rather an open project from the get-go, and I'd love to see others add to the body of the project.  That carries certain risks, though, I suppose.

Essentially, you need to decide if you want others to take you project whole cloth and be more successful with it than you. That sounds harsh but I am really surprised at the number of publishers who use OGL without understanding this. They believe in the "spirit" of the OGL, This means that the guy who uses your project in theirs will improve it and not just take it all and reformat it, repackage it and sell it for $5 less than you did.

Essentially, I am saying:
1. Determine the parts you want in OGC.
2. Define the parts you do not want replicated and put that in your PI statement.
3. Do not be surprised if some guy takes the stuff you have declared as OGC and just reprints it. This is the permission you are giving to any user of OGL as long as they abide by the OGL.

Hope that helps,
Bill

That makes sense.  So it sounds like your route to licensed use is through the OGL Mongoose is offering.  So far Mongoose seems very support of 3rd party material.  They may be willing to let you know if what you are doing conforms to the license as they see it.  Anyway good luck, I for one always enjioy Traveller content especially when it is Classic Traveller based.
