This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Crazy idea - CCG role playing

In the 4e debates the Chirs Pramas review mentioned that 4e felt like a CCG to him (well character gen did) .

That got me thinking are there any RPGs that make use of CCGs kind on a RPG / CCG hybrid.

I was thinking character generation in particular but you could extend it to combat with special one off combat feats. Each player brings a 'deck' to the game you could build decks for fighters mages (spells rather than feats) etc etc The DM could have an adventure deck (you could sell modules as maps + decks ) you could even do DM less games using some card/map heroquestesque thing.

Anyone seen anythign liek that ?

Would you play it ?

I've had a similar idea, though I doubt I could execute it. It does sound like a lot of fun, and it would probably sell like crazy.

There are already wargames that use cards in cool ways. I've played a bit of Down in Flames and was impressed. Up Front is legendary, and Blue and Grey sounds cool, but I haven't played either. Magic Realm doesn't use cards for character powers but it does use chits in somewhat the same way.

The trouble with the Wargame stuff is often the cards depict tactical options. So you can't rush the machine gun nest without a 'rush' card. You would need to avoid that kind of thing.
But I can see that D&D feats could be rolled into cards..... and you could explain the randomness of magic spells appearing in your head with a meta-Vancian-Pratchetesque spells are ideas that fly through the universe and occassionally collide in the head of someone able to use them but once used are forgotton kind of a thing....
I do think this kind of game woudl be fun to play I have to say

Arcadia: The Wyld Hunt, was pretty much this--a epic "dungeon" crawl with a character. You got a card, gave him special powers and artifacts, and wondered around a map made of other cards which an "opponent" put tests, trials and monsters under, with all that entailed (combat, magic widget use, treasure)

I've seen other people attempting to do it as well, but haven't yet seen one that's been successful.

Actually I think that would be fine. If one parameter of a character is ability to discard/draw cards, or ability to hold a larger hand, then characters with more situational awareness would be better able find opportunities to take action and combine card effects (all at once or in sequence depending on how card play works).

There is an RPG with a collectible card game element.  I can't remember the name of it, but I traded a C&C PHB for a box of decks for it at Origins two years ago.

It's orange and has a dragon on it.

We played the RAGE (WoD Werewolves) CCG with everyone drawing from the same deck, and any new card that entered play had to have the player describe "what was going on" in the story.  It was RPG-ish for sure.

Heh, i was just overwhelmed with the thoughts of each 'class' having a deck to choose from. Each combat, picking out 6 cards randomly that they get to play during the combat. Each card being a special move or some sort.

Then I remembered back to the hey deys of M:tG and could see people desperately buying booster packs for "EVISCERATING STRIKE" rares :)

I know TORG (1st edition) made some use of cards to add bonuses and random elements into the game.  Additionally, there was a gamecube RPG that featured cards to determine what actions could be done.  Of course, you now have all of the issues of dealing with a card game and RPG all at once:)   If you can do it, cool.  However, I can see how hard it would be to pull off.

Plus:

There is the upcoming Dungeoneer RPG from Thomas Denmark (based on his non-collectable Dungeoneer Card Game).

It really wouldn't. CCGs are long past their prime and, with very very few notable exceptions (mainly MtG faict). dead.

Yeah. As Dirk said, it's Dragon Storm. One of my favorites. It's no longer random...but I wish they'd go back to that.

I've actually been toying with a card mechanic system for an rpg but making a "collectible" cards would make it totally tank. I think the only collectible RPG related things RPG gamers are willing to buy that are WotC minis.

That said, if you could make non-random decks and boosters that might actually work. You could almost replace supplental books with booster card packs that have little rules extentions, monsters, weapons and other things on them.

I recall seeing a fan-made RPG on the internet based on Magic: The Gathering that incorporated MtG matches into its mechanics.  Buggered if I can remember what it was called, though.
