This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

If you tell me the dice explode on a '1' for non-combat skills and the highest value for a combat skill I'll get me coat.....

Quote from: Bloody Stupid Johnson;542458Generally I think the design process is a bit backward since its starting with an idea and then trying to build a system around it, instead of starting with the objectives and designing a system to meet them. Just sayin': I do a lot of that too...
QuoteYes, and I think if you're starting with a mechanic the crucial part is where you make it a Game rather than just a Task Resolution system.

I don't think that's exactly how it works. You just gather up as many dice and roll them, keeping the best 2.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

That's kind of how the DCC RPG works, the HD you roll for hps is also the die you roll when you get healed, so if a Warrior is healed for 3 dice, thats 3d12, while the Wizard would get 3d4 (I can hear Marley's shriek from here :D).  Also classes get different dice to roll on critical tables.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

ties you narrow stereotypes. How about a lightweight fighter who hits for high damage due to finese, or a magic user with lots of hit points who uses the HP as a mana pool, or how about a heavyweight fighter who has no range attack, say some sort of Galdiator thingie.

A good system should be one that creates a simple way of modelling the world that stands up to moderate scrutiny but also allows for a range of playable options.

This system seems like all warriors would be brawny guys that hit for a lot of damage so the mechanical process is limiting not enabling roleplay options.

Meh, that's fine because it's proportional.:)
